The Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year (often called the FWA Footballer of the Year, or in England simply the Footballer of the Year) is an annual award given to the player who is adjudged to have been the best of the season in Football in England, English football. The award has been presented since the 1947–48 in English football, 1947–48 season, with the inaugural winner being Blackpool F.C., Blackpool winger Stanley Matthews. The latest winner of the award as of 2024–25 in English football, 2024–25 is Mohamed Salah of Liverpool F.C., Liverpool. Overview Tottenham Hotspur won their first league title, while Newcastle United defeated Blackpool 2–0 to win their fourth FA Cup. They would win it twice more over the next four seasons. Overview Portsmouth retained the First Division title by one of the narrowest margins in history ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. An event that was much talked about in the city of Sheffield for many years was the way the promotion race from the Football League Second Division, Second Division was won.
