Ewald Schurer
Ewald Schurer (15 April 1954 – 2 December 2017) was a German politician for the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Social Democratic Party (SPD). At the time of death, he had been serving in the Bundestag since 2005. He had previously served in the Bundestag from 1998 to 2002. He was elected to the local council of Ebersberg, Bavaria in 1984. A Roman Catholic, Schurer was married with four children. He ran unsuccessfully in Erding – Ebersberg in 2009 German federal election, 2009, 2013 German federal election, 2013 and 2017 German federal election, 2017. Schurer died on 2 December 2017 at his home in Ebersberg, at the age of 63. The Social Democratic Party of Germany ( , SPD ) is a social democratic political party in Germany. It is one of the major parties of contemporary Germany. Saskia Esken has been the party's leader since the 2019 leadership election together with Lars Klingbeil, who joined her in December 2021. After losing the 2025 federal election, the party is part of the Merz government as the junior coalition partner. The SPD is a member of 12 of the 16 German state governments and is a leading partner in seven of them.
