Everybody Hollerin' Goat
''Everybody Hollerin' Goat'' is an album by the American musician Othar Turner, released in 1998. He is credited with the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band. Turner was 90 when he recorded the album. The title refers to Turner's barbecued goat parties. Production Recorded mostly on Turner's north Mississippi farm, the album was produced by Luther Dickinson. R.L. Boyce, Turner's nephew, contributed to the album. The sessions took place between 1992 and 1997. It was Dickinson's intention to simply make a document of Turner's music for Turner and his family. Dickinson first noticed Turner when the fife player appeared on a 1970s episode of ''Mister Rogers' Neighborhood''. Dickinson sampled ''Everybody Hollerin' Goat'' on his North Mississippi Allstars album ''Shake Hands with Shorty''. Othar Turner
Othar "Otha" Turner (June 2, 1907 – February 27, 2003) was one of the last well-known fife players in the vanishing American fife and drum blues tradition. His music was also part of the African-American genre known as Hill country blues. Early life and education Othar Turner, nicknamed "Otha", was born in Canton, Madison County, Mississippi in 1907. He moved further north, living his entire life in northern Mississippi hill country as a farmer near Como, Mississippi in Panola County. In 1923, aged 16, he learned to play fifes fashioned out of rivercanes and gradually learned other instruments as well. Musicmaking In the late 1960s and 1970s, scholars from nearby colleges made field recordings of Turner and his friends' music, as examples of local traditions, but did not release these. Hill country blues (also known as North Mississippi hill country blues or North Mississippi blues) is a regional style of country blues. It is characterized by a strong emphasis on rhythm and percussion, steady guitar riffs, few chord changes, unconventional song structures, and heavy emphasis on the "groove", which has been characterized as the "hypnotic boogie". The hill country is a region of northern Mississippi bordering Tennessee. It lies in the counties of Desoto, Marshall, Panola, Tate, Tippah, and Lafayette and straddles the ecoregions of the North Hilly Plain (Red Clay Hills or North Central Hills), the Loess Plains, and Bluff Hills. Luther Andrews Dickinson (born January 18, 1973) is the lead guitarist and vocalist for the North Mississippi Allstars and the son of record producer Jim Dickinson. He is also known for being the lead guitarist for The Black Crowes. He hosts '' Guitar Xpress'' on the Video on Demand network Mag Rack. Career He was born in West Tennessee to Mary Lindsay and Jim Dickinson, a Memphis record producer. It features contributions from Cedric and Garry Burnside, Othar Turner, Jim Dickinson, Jimmy Crosthwait, Richard "Hombre" Price, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Steve Selvidge, Jimbo Mathus, Tate County Singers, Stu Cole and Greg Humphreys.
