Evergreen (American Band)
Evergreen was a Southern California underground post-hardcore band from the early-to-mid-1990s. They were influential in the development of emo in the 1990s. They had several releases over their lifespan, including two 7-inches, a split 7-inch with Los Angeles hardcore/screamo band Still Life, and a much sought-after 12-inch, most of which were released on Anomaly Records. They still have a 7-inch out on San Diego's Gravity Records. They are notorious amongst record collectors due to the rarity of the "Seven Songs" LP. Post-hardcore
Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression. Like the term " post-punk", the term "post-hardcore" has been applied to a broad constellation of groups. Initially taking inspiration from post-punk and noise rock, post-hardcore began in the 1980s with bands like Hüsker Dü and Minutemen. The genre expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with releases by bands from cities which had established hardcore scenes, such as Fugazi from Washington, D.C. as well as groups such as Big Black, Jawbox, Quicksand, and Shellac who stuck closer to post-hardcore's noise rock roots. Dischord Records became a major nexus of post-hardcore during this period. The genre also began to incorporate more dense, complex, and atmospheric instrumentals with bands like Slint and Unwound, and also experienced some crossover from indie rock with bands like The Dismemberment Plan. Still Life (US Band)
Still Life was an American post-hardcore band originally from Moorpark, California, and then the San Fernando Valley, California. They are credited for helping pioneer the first wave of emo. They started in the late 1980s with the name Monster Club. They changed their name in 1991 after the departure of the original lead singer Rick Rodney who joined the band Strife. They were active until 2003 when all of their instruments were stolen from Chris Pitzel's truck parked on the street in front of their house after a show. It was formed in 1991 by Matt Anderson, a member of the influential underground band Heroin. It has been central in developing and promoting the "San Diego sound" – an idiosyncratic form of post-hardcore with loose, chaotic musicianship and vocals, initiated by Heroin, Antioch Arrow, and Clikatat Ikatowi, as well as Mohinder from the Bay Area and Angel Hair from Colorado. Antioch Arrow
Antioch Arrow was an American punk rock band from San Diego, California, that formed in 1992. Most of their discography was released through the San Diego independent label Gravity Records. The label was responsible for raising San Diego's profile in the underground music scene of the mid-1990s. The band, breaking up in 1994 and releasing one final studio album posthumously in 1995, is now considered to be one of the most influential bands of the early 1990s that shaped emo and post-hardcore music of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Jason Lyon Boesel (born August 17, 1977) is an American musician, songwriter and producer based in Los Angeles. He was the drummer for Rilo Kiley and has also played with The Elected and Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. Bands He also drummed in the Bright Eyes touring band during their 2005 tour, and went on to write the liner notes for the consequent Bright Eyes live album, ''Motion Sickness'' and contributing to Bright Eyes' 2007 record, '' Cassadaga''. From December 2007, he has played with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst in Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, with whom Boesel wrote and sings lead for 2 tracks on their 2009 album '' Outer South''. Rilo Kiley ( ) is an American indie rock band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1998, the band consists of Jenny Lewis, Blake Sennett, Pierre de Reeder, and Jason Boesel. The group released their debut album '' Take-Offs and Landings'' under Seattle-based independent label Barsuk Records in 2001. After that, they released three additional studio albums and several EPs. In 2007, they were signed with Warner Bros. and subsequently made their major-label debut with the album ''Under the Blacklight''. History Rilo Kiley performed their first concert at Spaceland in Los Angeles in January 1998. Their debut EP, '' Rilo Kiley'' (later reissued as ''The Initial Friend EP''), was released in 1999. Phases (formerly known as JJAMZ and pronounced ''juh-jamz'') is an American indie pop band from Los Angeles, California composed of Jason Boesel ( Rilo Kiley / Bright Eyes/ Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band), Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet / Blackblack), Michael Runion, and Z Berg ( The Like). Background JJAMZ was started at karaoke night at Guys in Hollywood. The band name is an acronym using the first letter of each member's name. The group was a means of escape from each member's respective bands at a time when things seemed hectic for each member. "JJAMZ started at an interesting time in all of our lives.
