European Film Award for Best Production Designer is an award category in the European Film Awards. The category was first presented in 1990 being award to both art directors and costume designers. At the 1st European Film Awards in 1988, two art directors were nominated European Film Academy Award of Excellence, Special Aspect Award with Sergei Parajanov, Sergej Paradshanow winning the award for ''Ashik Kerib (film), Ashik Kerib''. Though the category was not presented from 2006 to 2009, four production designers received nominations for special awards with Pierre Pell and Stéphane Rozenbaum winning the European Film Academy Award of Excellence, Award for an Artistic Contribution for ''The Science of Sleep'' in 2006 and Uli Hanisch receiving the European Film Academy Award of Excellence, Prix d'Excellence for ''Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (film), Perfume: The Story of a Murderer'' in 2007. The European Film Academy is a group of European film director, filmmakers who come together in Berlin on the occasion of the first presentation of the European Film Awards in November 1988. Every year, the European Film Academy honors films and filmmakers with the European Film Awards. The ceremony takes place every even year in a different European city and every odd year in Berlin. Jan Roelfs (born 1957 in Amsterdam) is a production designer of Dutch descent. Roelfs was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction twice for the 1992 film ''Orlando'' and for the 1997 film ''Gattaca''. He shared the ''Orlando'' nomination with fellow production designer Ben Van Os and the ''Gattaca'' nomination with set decorator Nancy Nye. ''Sophie Scholl – The Final Days'' () is a 2005 German historical drama film directed by Marc Rothemund and written by Fred Breinersdorfer. It is about the last days in the life of Sophie Scholl, a 21-year-old member of the anti-Nazi non-violent student resistance group the White Rose, part of the German Resistance movement. ''The Northerners'' () is a 1992 Dutch film written and directed by Alex van Warmerdam. The film was selected as the Dutch entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 65th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
