Estonian Cinema
Cinema of Estonia is the film industry of the Republic of Estonia. The motion pictures have won international awards and each year new Estonian films are seen at film festivals around the globe. 1896—1911 The first "moving pictures" were screened in Tallinn in 1896. The first movie theater was opened in 1908. The first local documentary was made in 1908 with the production of a newsreel about Swedish King Gustav V’s visit to Tallinn. 1912—1918 The first Estonian documentary was created by Johannes Pääsuke in 1912 that was followed by a short film ''Karujaht Pärnumaal'' (Bear Hunt in Pärnumaa) in 1914. The first movie studio in Estonia, ''Estonia Film Tartus'' (The Tartu Studio of Estonia Film), was established by Johannes Pääsuke (1892–1918). Pääsuke produced documentaries, short films and pictures of Estonian nature for the Estonian National Museum. Vigased Pruudid
''Vigased pruudid'' (The Faulty Brides) is an Estonian feature-length comedy film made in 1929 based on Eduard Vilde's story of the same name. The film was directed by Johannes Loop and Konstantin Märska. A few minutes of excerpts from the film have been preserved. Background and history ''Vigased prudid'' was the first film based on an Estonian literary work and also the second feature film by the director Konstantin Märska. In the summer of 1928, Märska returned to his homeland from Berlin with years of experience in film work. On February 11, 1929, the newspaper wrote about the intention of the Film-Klub (a club of film enthusiasts founded in 1924) to make a film based on Vilde's story. The writer's consent had been obtained and the club members had learned some things, but, as usual, the financial situation created difficulties. ''The Adventures of Juku The Dog'' (1931) () is the first Estonian experimental animated short film, written and directed by Voldemar Päts (cinematographer), Voldemar Päts, produced by , and with animation by the cartoonist Elmar Jaanimägi. For the film about 5000 drawings were made. Out of the total of 180 meters (6 minutes) of shot film stock about 100m (4 minutes) have survived. The soundtrack for the silent film was provided by Records of the Tormolen Co. Parlophon. Two films in the series were attempted. The second one, called ''The Adventures of Juku on Land and Water'' (), was not completed and has not survived. ''The Great Waltz'' is a 1938 American biographical film based very loosely on the life of Johann Strauss II. It starred Luise Rainer, Fernand Gravet (Gravey), and Miliza Korjus. Rainer received top billing at the producer's insistence, but her role is comparatively minor as Strauss' wife, Poldi Vogelhuber. It was the only starring role for Korjus, who was a famous opera soprano and played one in the film. Joseph Ruttenberg won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Korjus was nominated for Supporting Actress, and Tom Held for Film Editing. Miliza Elizabeth Korjus (August 18, 1909 – August 26, 1980) was a Polish-Estonian lyric coloratura soprano opera singer who appeared in classical American and Mexican sound films during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Korjus became a naturalized United States citizen in her adulthood. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1938 for her performance in '' The Great Waltz''. Estonian Culture Film
The Estonian Culture Film () was a state-subsidized movie studio established in Estonia in 1931 by the Ministry of Culture. During the first years of existence, the studio mostly distributed films. The foundation for the professional Estonian film industry was created by training filmmakers in Germany, where the professional production equipment for the studio was also purchased. The studio's sound equipment from the 1930s is preserved in the Estonian Film Archives and is still in good working order even today. In 1936, Culture Film was transferred to the authority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, at the same time the Estonian Film Archives were established. Thanks to the state archive, many of the movies produced by the Culture Film from 1936 to 1940 have survived, even though during World War II many film negatives were destroyed.
