Eskilstrup Railway Station
Eskilstrup is a town some north of Nykøbing Falster on the Danish island of Falster. As of 2024, it had a population of 1,082. History Eskilstrup Church, built in the Romanesque style, dates from the 12th century. In accordance with local tradition, it is painted red. It is best known for its frescos, said to be Denmark's oldest. The town has grown up around Eskilstrup railway station, which opened together with the Falster Railway in 1872. The earliest buildings included businesses and hotels close to the station on the main street. The railway is now called the South Line, with frequent train stops at Eskilstrup. Falster
Falster () is an island in south-eastern Denmark with an area of and 43,398 inhabitants as of 1 January 2010."Danmarks Statistik." Retrieved 28 June 2010. Located in the Kattegat, Belts and Sound area, it is part of Region Zealand and is administered by Guldborgsund Municipality. Falster includes Denmark's southernmost point, Gedser Odde, near Gedser. European Route E47
European route E47 is a road (part of the United Nations international E-road network) connecting Lübeck in Germany to Helsingborg in Sweden via the Danish capital Copenhagen. It is also known as the Vogelfluglinie (German) or Fugleflugtslinjen (Danish). The road is of motorway standard all the way except for in Germany and 6 km (4 miles) of city roads in Helsingør, Denmark; there are also two ferry connections. Improvements A fixed link between Germany and Denmark was planned to have been completed by 2020, now delayed to 2029. It will be a tunnel rather than a bridge. The road across Fehmarn will be widened from two to four lanes before the tunnel opens. A construction start ceremony was held for this on 25 August 2023. Hjalmar Petersen
Hjalmar Petersen (January 2, 1890March 29, 1968) was an American journalist and politician who served as the List of Governors of Minnesota, 23rd Governor of Minnesota from 1936 to 1937, succeeding the late Floyd Olson. Background Hjalmar Petersen was born in Eskildstrup, Denmark, to Lauritz and Anna Petersen, who moved with Hjalmar to Chicago, Illinois, shortly after his birth. They later moved to the Danebod in Tyler, Minnesota. Petersen attended school until the seventh grade. His career in journalism, which had begun in 1904, culminated in his purchase in 1914 of the ''Askov American'' in Askov, Minnesota, a weekly newspaper he owned for the rest of his life. Jens Clausen
Jens Christen (Christian) Clausen (March 11, 1891 – November 22, 1969) was a Danish- American botanist, geneticist, and ecologist. He is considered a pioneer in the field of ecological and evolutionary genetics of plants. Biography Clausen was born in Nr. Eskilstrup, Soderup parish on the island of Zealand, Denmark. He was the son of Christen Augustinus Clausen (1858-1938) and Christine (Christensen) Clausen (1856-1933). His parents were farmers and at age 14 he took responsibility for the family farm and was largely educated at home with the assistance of a local school teacher. He studied Mendel's genetics and Darwinian evolutionary theory. In 1913 he entered the University of Copenhagen, where he studied botany, genetics and ecology. Krokodille Zoo
The Crocodile Zoo () is a zoo on the Danish island of Falster. It is located northeast of Eskilstrup, towards the northern centre of the island. Established in 2000, the zoo has the world's largest collection of crocodilians (crocodiles, alligators, caimans, gharial and relatives) with almost all existing species (24 species, same as St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park). Danmarks Traktormuseum
Danmarks Traktormuseum ("Denmark's Tractor Museum"; formerly Lolland-Falster Tractor and Engine Museum) is located in Eskilstrup on the Danish island of Falster. The tractor and motor museum is housed in a brick warehouse dating from 1918. It contains tractors and engines built between 1880 and 1960 by Bukh, Ferguson, Fiat, Ford, and Volvo. History The museum is owned by Guldborgsund Municipality. After the building sat vacant for some years, the municipality took it over in 1981 and in 1986 moved the Tractor and Engine Museum into it. The new museum was officially opened in 1988. The exhibition area covers about over four floors of the old warehouse building, the three wooden floors supported by 24 columns; and a nearby workshop building.
