Enige Og Tro Inntil Dovre Faller
Enige og tro inntil Dovre faller (“United and loyal until Dovre crumbles”) is a national motto of Norway. It derives from a quotation of the Constitutional fathers in the 1814 Eidsvoll oath. The oath was taken as a pledge after the negotiations at the National Assembly in Eidsvoll concluded on May 20, 1814. According to Nicolai Wergeland, a member of the Norwegian Constituent Assembly, the representatives joined arms and formed a chain of brotherhood, upon which they shouted, “United and loyal until the mountains of Dovre crumble”. Dovre Mountains were long considered the highest mountains in Norway and played an important role in the national romantic ideology. The words have since been repeated in Norwegian politics and culture as a slogan for national patriotism, independence, unity, and democracy, including during the nation-building period in the 19th century and the dissolution of the union with Sweden in 1905.Hyvik, Jens Johan. Norwegian Constituent Assembly
The Norwegian Constituent Assembly ( or ) is the name given to the 1814 constitutional assembly that adopted the Norwegian Constitution and formalised the dissolution of the union with Denmark. The meetings took place at the Eidsvoll Manor in the village of Eidsvoll Verk in the Eidsvoll parish in Akershus county, Norway from 10 April to 20 May 1814. In Norway, it is often just referred to as ''Eidsvollsforsamlingen'', which means ''The Assembly of Eidsvoll''. The Assembly The election started in February 1814 in Christiania (now Oslo) in order to draft the Norwegian Constitution. Nicolai Wergeland
Nicolai Wergeland (9 November 1780 – 25 March 1848) was a Norwegian minister, writer and politician, and a member of the Norwegian Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll that wrote the Constitution of Norway on 17 May 1814. He was elected as one of two delegates from Kristiansand to the Eidsvoll Assembly in 1814. He represented the unionist side, and came very well prepared to Eidsvoll, bringing his own constitution draft. Along with him from Kristiansand came wholesaler Ole Clausen Mørch. Family Wergeland's family hailed from Brekke in Sogn. His father was Halvor Lassesen, a teacher and parish clerk in Hosanger. Wergeland's daughter Camilla Collett, author of the novel ''Amtmandens døttre'' ("The Governor's Daughters", 1854, anonymously), is regarded as Norway's first feminist writer. Dovre Mountains
Dovrefjell is a mountain range in Central Norway that forms a natural barrier between Eastern Norway and Trøndelag. The mountain range is located in Innlandet, Møre og Romsdal, and Trøndelag counties in Norway. As a result of its central location, its valleys and passes have been heavily trafficked during and probably preceding historical times. Several mountain inns were established in the Middle Ages to house pilgrims traveling through Dovrefjell to Trondheim, and there are even ruins of an old leper colony in the northern area of it. The main south-north highway (European route E6) and the Dovrebanen railway line both run through a mountain pass in the Dovrefjell range. Union Between Sweden And Norway
