The history of the England national football team, also known as the Three Lions, begins with the first representative international match in 1870 and the first officially-recognised match two years later. England primarily competed in the British Home Championship over the following decades. Although the FA had joined the international governing body of association football FIFA in 1906, the relationship with the British associations was fraught. In 1928, the British nations withdrew from FIFA, in a dispute over payments to amateur players. This meant that England did not enter the first three World Cups. The Three Lions first entered the World Cup in 1950 and have since qualified for 16 of the 19 finals tournaments to 2022. 1897–98 British Home Championship
The 1897–98 British Home Championship was the fifteenth edition of the annual football (soccer), football tournament played between the British Home Nations. England national football team, England won the title after whitewashing all three opponents and taking the maximum six points. Scotland national football team, Scotland came second after winning two of their games whilst Ireland national football team (1882–1950), Ireland came third following a close victory over Wales national football team, Wales in Llandudno. 1894–95 British Home Championship
The 1894–95 British Home Championship was an international football tournament played between the British Home Nations. The competition was won by England, who like second placed Wales, did not lose a game. Wales however failed to win one either, scoring three draws and so finishing behind England. Scotland took joint second place with three points gained from a win, draw and a loss. Ireland came last with a single point garnered from their draw with Wales. England and Ireland played the first match of the competition, the Irish suffering a 9–0 defeat in Derby to give England the immediate advantage. The 1892–93 British Home Championship was an international football tournament between the British Home Nations. The competition was won and dominated by England, who beat all three rival teams and scored 17 goals in just three matches. Fred Spiksley claimed four and Walter Gilliat scored a hat-trick in the competition's opening game. Scotland came second with victories over Ireland and Wales, who finished third and fourth respectively. England began as the strongest team, scoring twelve goals in the first two games against the Irish and the Welsh with only one in reply. It was won by England who won all three games against their rivals, even though they played two games on the same day against Wales and Ireland, providing a team of amateur players for the Welsh match and professionals against Ireland, both teams forging solid 2–0 victories. Scotland came second, winning their matches against Wales and Ireland, who shared third place after drawing with one another. England's double victories came shortly after the Welsh-Irish draw in Bangor and it gave them an immediate advantage over their opponents. The 1890–91 British Home Championship was an international football tournament between the British Home Nations. Despite strong showings from all four teams, England eventually won the trophy with victories in all three games including, as at the 1890 and 1892 competitions, matches against Wales and Ireland played simultaneously. Ireland notched up one of their highest ever wins, 7–2 over Wales, but still only finished third, whilst the Welsh ran Scotland close in their encounter, but ultimately scored zero points. Scotland and Ireland began the tournament with the Scots securing a narrow win in Glasgow. The 1889–90 British Home Championship was an edition of the annual international football tournament played between the British Home Nations. The seventh such competition held, the 1890 edition was, for the second time, jointly won by England and Scotland, the sixth time that Scotland had won. 1887–88 British Home Championship
The 1887–88 British Home Championship was the fifth edition of the annual international football tournament played between the British Home Nations. It was the first edition of the tournament in which Scotland did not at least share in the trophy and was also notable for a record flood of goals, 46 in six games, 26 of them conceded by Ireland, who suffered a disastrous competition. England began the tournament in the same vein as they finished it, winning the opening match 5–1 against Wales at the Alexandra Recreation Ground in Crewe. Wales responded to this, and to their shock defeat by Ireland the year previously with an 11–0 thrashing of the visiting Irish, a Welsh record scoreline which remains standing after years.
