Enemy At The Door
''Enemy at the Door'' is a British television drama series made by London Weekend Television for ITV. The series was shown between 1978 and 1980 and dealt with the German occupation of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, during the Second World War. The programme generated a certain amount of criticism in Guernsey, particularly for being obviously filmed on Jersey. The series also marked the television debut of Anthony Head as a member of the island resistance. The theme music was composed by Wilfred Josephs. Plot The islanders were chiefly represented by the respected local doctor, Philip Martel ( Bernard Horsfall), who struggled to maintain the peace, while the Germans were led by Major Dieter Richter ( Alfred Burke), a peacetime academic who was inclined to be lenient on the Guernsey populace, but whose approach was challenged by his more conventionally nasty SS counterpart Hauptsturmführer Klaus Reinicke ( Simon Cadell). Jersey
Jersey ( ; ), officially the Bailiwick of Jersey, is an autonomous and self-governing island territory of the British Islands. Although as a British Crown Dependency it is not a sovereign state, it has its own distinguishing civil and government institutions, so qualifies as a small nation or island country. Helen Shingler
Helen Shingler (29 August 1919 – 8 October 2019) was a British film and television actress. Biography Shingler was born on 29 August 1919. She married producer Seafield Head, and was the mother of actor and singer Murray Head and actor Anthony Head; her granddaughters include actresses Emily and Daisy Head. Her television roles include Madame Maigret in the BBC Television series ''Maigret'' (1960–63), in which Rupert Davies played the eponymous French detective. David Waller
David Waller (27 November 1920 – 23 January 1997) was an English actor best known for his role as Inspector Jowett in the British television series ''Cribb''. He also appeared as Stanley Baldwin in ITV's '' Edward & Mrs Simpson'' (1978), and in " The Woman He Loved" (1988). Waller worked extensively in the theatre and was a mainstay at the Royal Shakespeare Company from its founding until the early 1980s. He played Bottom in the original cast of Peter Brook's celebrated 1970 Royal Shakespeare Company production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. John Nettles
John Vivian Drummond Nettles (born 11 October 1943) is an English actor and author. He is best known for his starring roles as detectives in the crime drama television series '' Bergerac'' (1981–1991) in the title role, and ''Midsomer Murders'' (1997–2011) as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby. He has also narrated several television series. Early life Nettles was born in St Austell in 1943. His birth mother was an Irish nurse who came to work in Great Britain during the Second World War. He was adopted at birth by carpenter Eric Nettles and his wife Elsie. As a youth he attended St Austell Grammar School.
