''Encounters of the Spooky Kind'' () is a 1980 Hong Kong martial arts comedy horror film starring and directed by Sammo Hung, written by Hung and Huang Ying, and produced by Hung's film production company Bo Ho Film Company. Released as ''Spooky Encounters'' in the United States and also known as ''Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind'', the latter title more blatantly mimicking the title of the film ''Close Encounters of the Third Kind'' (1977), ''Encounters of the Spooky Kind'' popularized the production of films based on the jiangshi of Chinese legends in the Hong Kong film industry, though it was not the first. As Andrew Heskens of easternkicks.com wrote, "Sammo Hung ..took the idea of hopping vampires/deceased from ''The Shadow Boxing'' (aka ''The Spiritual Boxer II'') and turned it into a phenomenon with ''Encounter of the Spooky Kind'', and things were never the same." Sammo Hung
Samuel "Sammo" Hung Kam-bo ( zh, t=洪金寶, j=Hung4 Gam1-bou2; born 7 January 1952) is a Hong Kong actor, martial artist, film producer and Film director, director, known for his work in martial arts films, Hong Kong action cinema, and as a fight choreographer for other actors such as Kim Tai-chung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, and Yuen Wah. Hung is one of the pivotal figures who spearheaded the Hong Kong New Wave movement of the 1980s, helped reinvent the martial arts genre and popularized the zombie-like jiangshi fiction, jiangshi genre. Yuen Biao (born Ha Lingchun; 26 July 1957) is a Hong Kong actor, martial artist and stuntman. He specialises in acrobatics and Chinese martial arts and has also worked on over 80 films as actor, stuntman and action choreographer. He was one of the Seven Little Fortunes from the China Drama Academy at the Peking Opera School along with his "brothers" Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan. Chung Fat is a Hong Kong–based actor, choreographer, producer, and director. He primarily stars in jiangshi fictions and martial art movies. Early life Chung was born on 2 December 1953. He is a native of Guangdong province and of Han ethnicity. As a teenager, he was a Northern Praying Mantis practitioner with Lam Ching-ying, under the guidance of Madame Fan Fok-fa. Lü Dongbin is a legendary Chinese scholar and poet who lived during the Tang dynasty whose lifetime supposedly spanned two hundred and twenty years. Elevated to the status of an immortal in the Chinese cultural sphere by Daoists, he is one of the most widely known of the group of deities known as the Eight Immortals. Lü is also a historical figure and mentioned in the official history book ''History of Song''. He is widely considered to be one of the earliest masters of neidan, or internal alchemy.
