Empire Carey
''Ragnhild'' was a cargo ship which was built in 1941 for the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as ''Empire Carey''. In 1942 she was transferred to the Norwegian Government in exile and renamed ''Ragnhild''. Her war service is very well documented, and serves to illustrate a typical tramp ship's service life during the Second World War. She was sold out of government service in 1946 and renamed ''Penelope''. She was sold to Finland in 1950 and served until 1972 when she was sold to Sweden, renamed ''Ingeborg'' and hulked. Laid up in 1974, she was scrapped in Denmark in 1976. Description The ship was built by William Gray & Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool, as yard number 1125. William Gray & Company Ltd. was a British shipbuilding company located in West Hartlepool, County Durham, in North East England. Founded in 1863 by John Denton and William Gray as a partnership, it became a private and then a public limited company under the leadership of three generations of the Gray family until finally Liquidation, wound up in 1962. Convoy ON 92 was a trade convoy of merchant ships during the Second World War. It was the 92nd of the numbered series of ON convoys Outbound from the British Isles to North America. The ships departed from Liverpool on 6 May 1942Hague, p. 158 and were joined on 7 May by Mid-Ocean Escort Force Group A-3. The convoy was discovered by Wolfpack Hecht on 11 May; seven ships were sunk before the U-boats lost contact with the convoy on 13 May. Surviving ships reached Halifax, Nova Scotia on 21 May. The Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission (Nortraship) was established in London in April 1940 to administer the Norwegian merchant fleet outside German-controlled areas. Nortraship operated some 1,000 vessels and was the largest shipping company in the world. It made a major contribution to the Allied war effort. Convoy commodore also known as commodore, convoys was the title of a civilian put in charge of the good order of the merchant ships in the British convoys used during World War II. Usually the convoy commodore was a retired naval officer or a senior merchant captain drawn from the Royal Naval Reserve. He was aboard one of the merchant ships.
