Embletonia Gracilis
''Embletonia gracilis'' is a species of sea slug, a dorid nudibranch shell-less mollusk in the family Embletoniidae ''Embletonia'' is a genus of gastropods in the suborder Cladobranchia. It is the only family in the monotypic family Embletoniidae.MolluscaBase eds. (2022). MolluscaBase. Embletonia Alder & Hancock, 1851. Accessed through: World Register of Marin .... Description ''Embletonia gracilis'' is translucent white, and has been described to be less than 8mm, but can grow to be 20-30mm in length. They have an elongated shape and a single row of cerata, which divide into four parts at the tip, containing nematocysts. They do not have oral tentacles and instead, flat oral lobes next to the mouth. Several studies suggest that they eat hydroids. Distribution The species has a large distribution across the West Indo-Pacific. References Embletoniidae Molluscs of the Pacific Ocean Gastropods described in 1928 {{Heterobranchia-stub ... Nudibranch
Nudibranchs () are a group of soft-bodied marine gastropod molluscs which shed their shells after their larval stage. They are noted for their often extraordinary colours and striking forms, and they have been given colourful nicknames to match, such as "clown", "marigold", "splendid", "dancer", "dragon", or "sea rabbit". Currently, about 3,000 valid species of nudibranchs are known.Ocean Portal (2017)A Collage of Nudibranch Colors Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Retrieved 17 April 2018. The word "nudibranch" comes from the Latin "naked" and the Ancient Greek () " gills". Nudibranchs are often casually called sea slugs, as they are a family of opistobranchs (sea slugs), within the phylum Mollusca (molluscs), but many sea slugs belong to several taxonomic groups which are not closely related to nudibranchs. A number of these other sea slugs, such as the photosynthetic '' Sacoglossa'' and the colourful Aglajidae, are often confused with nudibranchs. Dist ... Two genera are recognised: * '' Embletonia gracilis'' Risbec, 1928 * '' Embletonia pulchra'' (Alder & Hancock, 1844) Distribution and habitat Species of the genus have a cosmopolitan distribution In biogeography, cosmopolitan distribution is the term for the range of a taxon that extends across all or most of the world in appropriate habitats. Such a taxon, usually a species, is said to exhibit cosmopolitanism or cosmopolitism. The ext .... References External links Alder, J.; Hancock, A. (1844). Descrip ... Molluscs Of The Pacific Ocean
Mollusca is the second-largest phylum of invertebrate animals after the Arthropoda, the members of which are known as molluscs or mollusks (). Around 85,000 extant species of molluscs are recognized. The number of fossil species is estimated between 60,000 and 100,000 additional species. The proportion of undescribed species is very high. Many taxa remain poorly studied. Molluscs are the largest marine phylum, comprising about 23% of all the named marine organisms. Numerous molluscs also live in freshwater and terrestrial habitats. They are highly diverse, not just in size and anatomical structure, but also in behaviour and habitat. The phylum is typically divided into 7 or 8 taxonomic classes, of which two are entirely extinct. Cephalopod molluscs, such as squid, cuttlefish, and octopuses, are among the most neurologically advanced of all invertebrates—and either the giant squid or the colossal squid is the largest known invertebrate species.
