Embassy of Israel in Beijing ( ; zh, 以色列駐華大使館) is the official diplomatic mission of the State of Israel in the People's Republic of China. The embassy was opened in 1992, and the current ambassador is Irit Ben-Abba. History Formation of Relations The first Israeli mission in China operated in Shanghai for several months between 1948 and 1949, and was managed by :he:משה יובל, Moshe Yuval. This mission was mainly focused on the resettlement of Jewish war refugees in Europe and the Chinese Jewish community to Israel, and most Chinese Jews resided in Harbin. The Emblem of Israel ( he, סמל מדינת ישראל, Sēmel Medīnat Yīsrāʾēl; ar, شعار دولة إسرائيل, translit=Shiʾeer Dawlat ʾIsrāʾīl) depicts a temple menorah surrounded by an olive branch on each side, with the word ''Israel'' written in Hebrew () below it. While it is commonly displayed in blue and white, the emblem has appeared in alternative colour combinations depending on the use, such as on the Israeli Presidential Standard (see below). Zev Sufott
Zev Sufott (27 October 1927 – 18 April 2014) was an Israeli diplomat who served as Israel's first Ambassador to the People's Republic of China, beginning in 1992. Born and raised in the United Kingdom, he was also a former Israeli Ambassador to the Netherlands and the Deputy Director for Europe within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Early life Sufott was born and raised in Liverpool, England. He graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, where he pursued Oriental Studies. Sufott and his parents were firm believers in Zionism. He was wounded during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War shortly after the creation of Israel. Sufott enrolled in the Chinese studies program at Yale University, where he learned Chinese more than forty years before becoming Ambassador to China.
