Eli HaZe'ev
Eli HaZe'ev was an American-born Israeli ultranationalist settler, who was a victim of the 1980 Hebron terrorist attack. A convert to Judaism and Vietnam War veteran, he was a member Meir Kahane's Kach Movement and of the Jewish Defense League. Biography Born James Eli Mahon Jr., HaZe'ev was born to US Air Force Colonel James E. Mahon in Alexandria, Virginia. He served as a sniper in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War where he was badly wounded. During the war he lost his thumb, his teeth were shattered by a grenade, he received napalm burns, and a enemy bullet had punctured his lung. After the war, Eli joined up with a motorcycle gang in Washington state and was arrested for allegedly killing another member with a shotgun, though the charges were later dropped. Eli immigrated to Israel in 1974 where he converted to Judaism and settled in the Kiryat Arba settlement of Hebron in the West Bank. Kahanists
Kahanism () is a religious Zionist ideology based on the views of Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the Jewish Defense League and the Kach party in Israel. Kahane held the view that most Arabs living in Israel are the enemies of Jews and Israel itself, and believed that a Jewish theocratic state, where non-Jews have no voting rights, should be created. The Kach party has been banned by the Israeli government. In 2004, the U.S. State Department designated it a Foreign Terrorist Organization. In 2022, it was removed from the U.S. terror blacklist due to "insufficient evidence" of the group's ongoing activity, but it remains a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity. The Kahanist Otzma Yehudit party won six seats in the 2022 election and is a member of the Israeli government, though it left between 21 January and 19 March 2025 because the government had agreed to a ceasefire in the Gaza war during that time.
