Elena Del Rivero
Elena del Rivero (b. 1949 Valencia, Spain) is a Spanish born American artist known for her installations and artist's books. She has lived in the United States since 1991. Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. In 2008 the Corcoran Gallery of Art exhibited two of Rivero's installations entitled ''Home Suite''. In 2015 Rivero received a Joan Mitchell Foundation award. In 2019 Rivero received a Guggenheim Fellowship. Rivero's 2020 installation ''Elena del Rivero: Home Address'' was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment. It was shown in multiple locations. The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), located in Washington, D.C., is "the first museum in the world solely dedicated" to championing women through the arts. NMWA was incorporated in 1981 by Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay. Joan Mitchell
Joan Mitchell (February 12, 1925 – October 30, 1992) was an American artist who worked primarily in painting and printmaking, and also used pastel and made other works on paper. She was an active participant in the New York School of artists in the 1950s. A native of Chicago, she is associated with the American abstract expressionist movement, even though she lived in France for much of her career. Mitchell's emotionally intense style and its gestural brushwork were influenced by nineteenth-century post-impressionist painters, particularly Henri Matisse. Memories of landscapes inspired her compositions; she famously told art critic Irving Sandler, "I carry my landscapes around with me." Her later work was informed and constrained by her declining health. Mitchell was one of her era's few female painters to gain critical and public acclaim. Guggenheim Fellowships are grants that have been awarded annually since by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to those "who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts." Each year, the foundation issues awards in each of two separate competitions: * One open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada. * The other to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Latin America and Caribbean competition is currently suspended "while we examine the workings and efficacy of the program. The U.S. and Canadian competition is unaffected by this suspension." The Anonymous Was A Woman Award is a grant program for women artists who are over 40 years of age, in part to counter sexism in the art world. It began in 1996 in direct response to the National Endowment for the Arts' decision to stop funding individual artists. The award comes with a grant of $25,000 and is designed to enable exceptional woman artists to further develop their work. Awardees are chosen on the basis of their past accomplishments, their originality and artistic growth, and the quality of their work. Since 1996, some 220 women have received the award and approximately 5.5 million USD has been awarded in total. The award was founded by a New York artist who originally chose to remain anonymous.
