Electronic Medical Records And Genomics Network
The Electronic Medical Records and Genomics Network (abbreviated the eMERGE Network) is a consortium of American medical institutions dedicated to advancing the use of electronic medical records for genomics research. It was established in 2007 and is funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). eMERGE's Administrative Coordinating Center is located at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. eMERGE's first phase, known as eMERGE-I, began after the NHGRI awarded grants to five institutions: Group Health Cooperative, Marshfield Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Northwestern University, and Vanderbilt University. Genomics is an interdisciplinary field of biology focusing on the structure, function, evolution, mapping, and editing of genomes. A genome is an organism's complete set of DNA, including all of its genes as well as its hierarchical, three-dimensional structural configuration. In contrast to genetics, which refers to the study of ''individual'' genes and their roles in inheritance, genomics aims at the collective characterization and quantification of ''all'' of an organism's genes, their interrelations and influence on the organism. National Human Genome Research Institute
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is an institute of the National Institutes of Health, located in Bethesda, Maryland. NHGRI began as the Office of Human Genome Research in The Office of the Director in 1988. This Office transitioned to the National Center for Human Genome Research (NCHGR), in 1989 to carry out the role of the NIH in the International Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP was developed in collaboration with the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and began in 1990 to sequence the human genome.
