Electoral Division Of Stuart
Stuart was an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. History Named after Scottish explorer John McDouall Stuart, it was initially created in 1947 as one of the five inaugural electoral divisions of the Northern Territory Legislative Council. It was an almost entirely rural electorate encompassing much of the western Territory, covering 383,859 km2 and taking in the towns of Dagaragu, Lajamanu, Willowra, Yuendumu, and part of the north-eastern side of Alice Springs. There were 5,242 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2016. It was originally easily held by the Country Liberal Party, but became much friendlier to Labor when a 1983 redistribution removed most of the Alice Springs area of the electorate. John McDouall Stuart
John McDouall Stuart (7 September 18155 June 1866), often referred to as simply "McDouall Stuart", was a Scottish explorer and one of the most accomplished of all Australia's inland explorers. Stuart led the first successful expedition to traverse the Australian mainland from south to north and return, through the centre of the continent. His experience and the care he showed for his team ensured he never lost a man, despite the harshness of the country he encountered. The explorations of Stuart eventually resulted in the 1863 annexation of a huge area of country to the Government of South Australia. This area became known as the Northern Territory. In 1911 the Commonwealth of Australia assumed responsibility for that area. In 1871–72 the Australian Overland Telegraph Line was constructed along Stuart's route. A by-election for the seat of Stuart in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly was held on 23 September 2006. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labor member Peter Toyne, the Minister for Health, on 29 August 2006 due to ill health. Gwoja is an electoral division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in a 2019 redistribution for the 2020 general election, replacing the electoral division of Stuart. The division is named after Gwoya Tjungurrayi, a Walpiri-Anmatyerre man who survived the Coniston massacre in 1928, and was depicted on an Australian postage stamp. His likeness was also the inspiration for the Aboriginal elder depicted on the reverse of the Australian two-dollar coin. Michael Patrick Francis Gunner (born 6 January 1976) is an Australian former politician who was the 11th Chief Minister of the Northern Territory from 2016 to 2022. He was a Labor member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, holding the seat of Fannie Bay in Darwin from the retirement of then Chief Minister Clare Martin at the 2008 election until his resignation in July 2022. Scott Lindsley McConnell is an Australian politician. He served as a member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2016 until 2020, representing the electorate of Stuart. Elected as a Labor MP, he was one of three MPs excluded from the Labor caucus on 21 December 2018 over criticism of the government; he then resigned from the party on 19 February 2019. Bess Nungarrayi Price (born 22 October 1960) is an Aboriginal Australian activist and politician. She was a Country Liberal Party member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2012 to 2016, representing the electorate of Stuart, and was Minister for Community Services in the Giles Ministry. She lives in Alice Springs in Central Australia, in the Northern Territory. Biography Born on 22 October 1960 in Yuendumu, Price's first language is Warlpiri.
