James Martin (Queensland Politician)
James Robert Martin (born 20 April 1981) is an Australian politician who currently serves as the Labor member for Stretton in the Queensland Legislative Assembly, having been elected at the 2021 Stretton state by-election on 24 July 2021. Martin replaced Duncan Pegg, who died of cancer in June 2021. Prior to his election, Martin had worked as an electorate officer for Pegg from 2015 until Pegg's death. He had previously contested Calamvale Ward at the local government elections for Brisbane City Council in 2020, achieving an 11.4% primary swing towards Labor but was not elected. Kuraby, Queensland
Kuraby is an outer southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Kuraby had a population of 8,737 people. Geography Kuraby is situated approximately by road south-east of the city of Brisbane. Beenleigh Road is the main road connecting the suburb to the motorways leading to the city and further parts of Brisbane and beyond. Kuraby is serviced by a fast electric train service to Brisbane city and the Gold Coast, whilst a bus service takes commuters to the large shopping centres of Upper Mount Gravatt and Springwood. In Australian politics, the two-party-preferred vote (TPP or 2PP), is the result of an opinion poll or a projection of an election result where preferences are distributed to one of the two major parties, the Labor Party and the Liberal/National Coalition e.g. "Coalition 50%, Labor 50%. The preference distribution is usually based upon the results of the last election, and the votes for other candidates are distributed between to the two parties. As such the TPP is a rough indicator of voting intent that focuses on determining the likely majority in the lower house. It is compared to previous values to predict the swing and hence the likelihood of a change in government between the major parties. 2021 Stretton State By-election
A by-election was held on 24 July 2021 for the Queensland Legislative Assembly seat of Stretton following the death of Duncan Pegg. Background Duncan Pegg was first elected at the 2015 election defeating incumbent Freya Ostapovitch on a swing of over 14%. Ostapovitch had won the previously safe seat for Labor during the Liberal National Party of Queensland landslide of the 2012 election. In subsequent elections, Pegg would increase the margin of Stretton back into safe territory for Labor and saw a nearly 5% swing to himself in the 2020 election. On 22 April 2021, Pegg announced that he would be resigning from his seat to focus on his health revealing that he had been diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and that it was a terminal illness. Pegg's death was announced by his electorate office on 10 June 2021. Duncan Pegg
Duncan Andrew Pegg (27 June 1980 – 10 June 2021) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Stretton in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from the 2015 election until his death in 2021. On 22 April 2021, Pegg announced he would be resigning within several weeks to undergo treatment for cancer. Pegg's death triggered a by-election for Stretton. Early life Pegg was born in Townsville, Queensland. He was the eldest in a family of five boys, including a set of triplets. He was raised and attended high school in Rockhampton, Queensland. Compelled by his objection to the rise of Pauline Hanson's One Nation, he joined the Australian Labor Party at the age of 17 in 1998. The Liberal National Party of Queensland (LNP) is a major conservative political party in Queensland, Australia. 2001 Queensland State Election
The 2001 Queensland state election was held on 17 February 2001 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The result of the election was the return of the Labor Party (ALP) government of Premier Peter Beattie, with an increased majority in a landslide. Labor won 66 seats, easily the most it has ever won in Queensland and one of Labor's best-ever results nationwide. There was a 10.07% swing towards Labor, while One Nation suffered a 13.98% swing against it, losing eight seats (five of which were held by the newly formed City Country Alliance after an internal split in December 1999).
