Murray (The Murray until 1910) is an electoral district in the Australian state of New South Wales. Murray is a regional electorate lying in the southwestern corner of the state. It encompasses several local government areas, namely Wentworth Shire, Balranald Shire, Carrathool Shire, the City of Griffith, Leeton Shire, Hay Shire, Murrumbidgee Shire, Murray River Council, Edward River Council and Berrigan Shire. History Murray was a single-member electorate from 1859 to 1880, returning two members from 1880 to 1894, returning to a single member electorate from 1894 to 1920. Murrumbidgee Shire
Murrumbidgee Shire was a local government area in the Riverina region of south western New South Wales, Australia. The Shire was located adjacent to the Murrumbidgee River and the Newell Highway. The two main administrative centres for the Murrumbidgee Shire were Coleambally and Darlington Point. It also contained the small town of Waddi. Amalgamation A 2015 review of local government boundaries by the NSW Government Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal recommended that the Murrumbidgee Shire merge with parts of the Jerilderie Shire to form a new council with an area of and support a population of approximately 3,000. The Jerilderie Shire Council submitted an alternate proposal to the Minister for Local Government that the entire Jerilderie Shire be amalgamated with the Murrumbidgee Shire. Electoral District Of Lachlan
Lachlan was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. During the first two Parliaments (1856–1859), there was an electorate in the same area called Lachlan and Lower Darling, named after the Lachlan and Darling Rivers. Lachlan was created in 1859 and abolished in 1880, partly replaced by Forbes. In 1894 Forbes was abolished and Lachlan was recreated. Electoral District Of Wentworth
Wentworth was an electoral district for the Legislative Assembly in the far south west of the Australian state of New South Wales and named after and including the town of Wentworth. It established in 1880 and partly replacing Lachlan. From 1885 until 1889 it elected two members. The population in Wentworth had grown significantly since the 1880 redistribution, especially as a result of the growth of mining at Broken Hill, with the electoral roll growing from 1,901 in 1880 to 5,617 in 1887. Under the formula for seats, Wentworth was due to return 3 members, however because of the large area covered by the district, in 1889 it was split into 3, Wentworth, Sturt and Wilcannia. Wentworth retained the eponymous town, along with the towns of Menindie and Pooncaira. Sturt contained the mining boom towns of Broken Hill, Silverton and Milparinka while Wilcannia was the only town in that district. James Hayes (Australian Politician)
James Hayes (1831 – 24 May 1908) was an Australian politician. Hayes was born in County Cork, Cork, Ireland and arrived with parents in New South Wales in 1837. He was educated at a private school near Parramatta, New South Wales, Parramatta and became a miller. He married Frances Foott in June 1861 and had four daughters and six sons. Hayes was elected as a member for the electoral district of Hume, district of The Hume of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1885 and was re-elected each election until multi-member districts were abolished in 1894, when he switched to the Electoral district of Murray, district of The Murray, which he held until 1904. In 1901 he was appointed a minister without portfolio in the See ministry. He did not contest the 1904 election as was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council where he served until his death. 1903 New South Wales Referendum
A referendum concerning the reduction of the members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly was put to voters on 16 December 1903, in conjunction with the 1903 federal election. The referendum was conducted on the basis of optional preferential voting. However, preferences were not counted, as an overwhelming majority voted to reduce the number of members to 90. The question The text of the question was: As to what shall be the number of Members of the Legislative Assembly. Which of the following numbers do you prefer, and what is the order of your preference? Results The referendum was overwhelmingly in favour of reducing the number of members to 90. Moulamein is a small town in New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area. At the , Moulamein had a population of 484 . Moulamein is the oldest town in the Riverina. The town is located between Balranald, Hay, Deniliquin and Swan Hill, at the junction of the Edward River and Billabong Creek. The name Moulamein is believed to be derived from a local Aboriginal word meaning "the meeting of the waters". Moama ( or ) is a town in the Murray region of southern New South Wales, Australia, in the Murray River Council local government area.
