Menai was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales from 1999 to 2015. It was most recently represented by Melanie Gibbons of the Liberal Party. Alison Megarrity
Alison Patricia Megarrity (9 February 1961 – 15 November 2022) was an Australian politician, who served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Menai for the Labor Party between 1999 and 2011. Megarrity's father was a railwayman and she grew up in central western New South Wales. She was educated at Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts by Macquarie University. She married Robert Megarrity in 1982 and they have two sons. She was a councillor of the City of Liverpool Council between 1994 and 1999. On 24 September 2010, Megarrity announced her decision to not seek re-election at the 2011 State election, citing personal reasons. In 2013, Megarrity won Labor pre-selection in the Division of Hughes for the 2013 federal election, but was defeated by the sitting member Craig Kelly. The 1999 New South Wales state election was held on Saturday, 27 March. All seats in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and half the seats in the New South Wales Legislative Council was up for election. The Incumbent New South Wales Premier Bob Carr won a second term with a 7% swing of vote against the Liberal National Party led by Kerry Chikarovski. Menai is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 29 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the Local government in Australia, local government area of the Sutherland Shire. History Menai is named after Menai Bridge, a town on the Menai Strait in Wales. The area now known as Menai was originally called Bangor in 1895 by the land's owner, a farmer named Owen Jones, after his birthplace Bangor, Gwynedd, Bangor in Wales. Melanie Gibbons
Melanie Rhonda Gibbons (born 18 September 1978) is an Australian politician who was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Menai from 2011 to 2015 and Holsworthy for the Liberal Party from 2015 to 2023. Early years and background Gibbons was born and raised in Woronora in the Sutherland Shire and worked as a real estate agent before becoming a development manager for Technical Aid to the Disabled. She also formerly worked for various state and federal politicians. Political career Elected to the Sutherland Shire Council in 2004 as a Liberal candidate, Gibbons served as deputy mayor from 2005 to 2006.
