Manly was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1986 to 1992. The district was based in the eastern suburbs of Brisbane and named for the suburb of Manly. Manly is an eastern bayside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Manly had a population of 4,064 people. Geography Manly is located by road east of the Brisbane GPO. Surrounding suburbs are Wynnum (to the north), Lota (to the south) and Manly West (to the west). To the east lies Moreton Bay (). Jim Elder (politician)
James Peter Elder (born 14 December 1950) is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1989 to 2001, representing Manly until 1992 and Capalaba thereafter. Originally elected as a Labor member and serving as Deputy Premier in the Beattie Government, Elder resigned from the party on 30 November 2000. Early life Elder was born in Melbourne. Before his election he was the Queensland manager for an access and scaffolding company, and was the first team manager for the Brisbane Broncos rugby league team. Political career Having been elected in 1989, he was appointed Minister for Business, Industry and Regional Development in 1992, serving until 1995. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. Thomas Glassey won the seat of Bundamba at that election, becoming the first self-identified "labor" MP in Queensland. Eric Shaw (politician)
Eric Frank Shaw (born 12 January 1936) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Wynnum to Thomas Bourke Shaw and Edna Eileen (née Reese). He attended Manly State School, Wynnum State High School and Central Technical School, becoming a clerk with Eagers Motors in Newstead in 1950 and then an apprentice plumber for Alan Moore & Co. Later he was a water supply, health and sewerage inspector for Brisbane City Council, to which he was elected in 1967. A Labor member, he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in 1977 as the member for Wynnum. From 1982 he was Opposition Spokesman on Welfare, Aboriginal and Islander Affairs, moving to Local Government in January 1983 (to which Main Roads and Racing were added in November).
