Electoral District Of City Of Melbourne
The Electoral district of City of Melbourne was one of the original sixteen electoral districts of the old unicameral Victorian Legislative Council of 1851 to 1856; Victoria having been made a separate colony in Australia in the former year. The Electoral district of City of Melbourne's area contained the North Melbourne and part of Jika Jika parishes, and was bound in part by Merri Creek, Moonee Ponds and Hobson's Bay. William Westgarth had been a representative in the New South Wales Legislative Council for the City of Melbourne, and topped the poll for this new district in Victoria. From 1856 onwards, the Victorian parliament consisted of two houses, the Victorian Legislative Council (upper house, consisting of Provinces) and the Victorian Legislative Assembly (lower house). Unicameralism
Unicameralism (from ''uni''- "one" + Latin ''camera'' "chamber") is a type of legislature consisting of one house or assembly that legislates and votes as one. James Murphy (Victorian Politician)
James Murphy (1821 – 27 December 1888) was a brewer and politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Murphy was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of John Murphy and his wife Mary, ''née'' Morgan. Colonial Australia Murphy arrived in the Port Phillip District around 1839. On 8 June 1853 Murphy was elected to the unicameral Victorian Legislative Council for the Electoral district of City of Melbourne, City of Melbourne. Murphy held this position until resigning in September 1855. Murphy died in Northcote, Victoria on 27 December 1888, he was unmarried. William Nicholson (Australian Politician)
William Nicholson (27 February 1816 – 10 March 1865) was an Australian colonial politician who became the third Premier of Victoria. He is remembered for having been called the "father of the ballot" due to his responsibility in introducing the secret ballot in Victoria. Due to this significant legacy, Nicholson Street, a major north–south traffic artery in modern Melbourne, is named after him. Early life Nicholson was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, the son of an Anglican farmer. At the age of twenty six, in 1842, he emigrated to Australia, setting up business as a grocer in Melbourne. He was a successful businessman and became the head of a merchant firm, W. Nicholson and Company.
