Politics of Norfolk Island takes place in the framework of the '' Norfolk Island Act 1979'', an act of the Parliament of Australia which governs the status of Norfolk Island as an external territory of Australia. The administrator of Norfolk Island is appointed by the federal government and administered through a federal government department (the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts since 2022). Norfolk Island historically enjoyed a significant level of self-government, with the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly serving as its independent legislature from 1979 to 2015 and electing a chief minister. 2010 Norfolk Island Legislative Election
The 2010 Norfolk Island legislative election was held on 17 March 2010 to elect the 13th Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly, the prime legislative body of Norfolk Island. Following the elections, David Buffett replaced Andre Nobbs as Chief Minister on 24 March, having returned to the Assembly after losing his seat at the previous election in 2007. Background Nine members are elected to the Assembly for a three-year term. Electors each have nine equal votes, which could be divided in any way between candidates, but no more than two votes could be given to any particular individual candidate. Eric Russell Hutchinson (born 19 June 1965) is an Australian politician who was the administrator of Norfolk Island, in office from 2017 to 2023. He previously served a single term in the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2016, representing the Division of Lyons for the Liberal Party. Early life Hutchinson was born in Launceston, Tasmania. He worked for various wool-exporting companies before entering politics. Politics Hutchinson was elected to federal parliament at the 2013 election, when he won the Division of Lyons from incumbent Labor MP Dick Adams. 2015 Norfolk Island Status Referendum
A referendum was held in Norfolk Island on 8 May 2015, asking residents if they should have a say in determining the island's political status. The referendum was successful, although the result was non-binding. The vote was initiated by the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly after it was announced on 19 March 2015 that self-governance for the island would be revoked by the Commonwealth and replaced by a local council, with the state of New South Wales providing services to the island. Both the Norfolk Island Labor Party and Norfolk Liberals supported a "no" vote.
