El Emigrante (short Story)
"El emigrante" (''The migrant'') is a flash fiction story by Mexican writer Luis Felipe Lomelí, published in 2005. It is one of the best-known and most widely cited examples of the genre in Spanish. The story Origin The type of micronarrative or microfiction of which "El emigrante" is a famous example has precursors in the 1980s and 1990s with the work of Jacques Sternberg and Philippe Delerm, but perhaps has been brought back to life through the influence of Facebook and Twitter. However, one should not consider micronarrative exclusively as a (post)modern form of literature. Micronarrative is better understood as one of many (re)configurations in the fragmentary writing continuum. In fact, microtexts are as old as literature itself. Flash fiction is a fictional work of extreme brevity that still offers character and plot development. Luis Felipe Lomelí
Luis Felipe Gómez Lomelí (January 10, 1975) is a Mexican writer and poet. He is best known for his flash fiction work " El emigrante" (The Migrant – 2005) and for the collection ''Todos santos de California'' (All Saints of California – 2002), which won the San Luis Potosí National Award for Best Short Story. Biography Luis Felipe Lomelí was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1975. He studied physical engineering, biotechnology and ecology. He gained a Ph.D in Science and Culture at Madrid's Autonomous University. He has worked as an environmental engineer on urban agriculture projects and with eco-feminist groups of women displaced by war in Colombia. Jacques Sternberg
Jacques Sternberg (April 17, 1923, Antwerp, Belgium – October 11, 2006, Paris) was a French-language writer of science fiction and '' fantastique''. Biography Sternberg was born to a well-to-do Russian- Jewish family. He was a poor student in school, particularly struggling in French. He began writing around the age of fifteen or sixteen. His early writings tended toward the fantastic and the burlesque, and it was only somewhat later that he began writing science fiction. After school Sternberg worked as a packer in a cardboard factory, before moving to Paris with the hope of becoming a publishing writer. The literary climate of 1950s Paris was dominated by the Surrealists and Sternberg found some success in that environment. Philippe Delerm (born November 27, 1950 in Auvers-sur-Oise, Val-d'Oise, France) is a French writer whose collection of essays ''La Première gorgée de bière et autres plaisirs minuscules'' sold more than one million copies in France. Writing career After a happy childhood with his teacher parents, Philippe Delerm pursued literary studies at Nanterre before becoming a teacher himself. In 1975, he married Martine Chosson, moved to Beaumont-le-Roger in Eure, and taught French Literature at the Marie Curie Collège (Secondary School) in Bernay. The first manuscripts which Delerm sent in from 1976 were refused by publishers. " ("Forget something? -If only!"). Themes The book opens with ''El emigrante'', one of the most celebrated and frequently cited of microfictions. Augusto Monterroso Bonilla (December 21, 1921 - February 7, 2003) was a Honduran writer who adopted Guatemalan nationality, known for the ironical and humorous style of his short stories. He is considered an important figure in the Latin American "Boom" generation, and received several awards, including the Prince of Asturias Award in Literature (2000), Miguel Ángel Asturias National Prize in Literature (1997), and Juan Rulfo Award (1996). ¿Olvida Usted Algo? – ¡Ojalá!
''¿Olvida usted algo? – ¡Ojalá!'' was an exterior installation by Mexican artist Susana Rodríguez that stood in the grounds of the Casa del Lago in Mexico City from 27 August 2009 to 6 September 2009. The work explored the relationship between construction and destruction. Work The outdoor installation is constructed of bricks, concrete, ceramic tiles and a wooden door. There are two half-destroyed walls, with an intact door. The work explores the idea of a building that perhaps has been destroyed during a storm, but where traces remain of the time when it was inhabited. The work is ambiguous, leaving it to the viewer to interpret whether the building was destroyed, is in the process of being built, or is complete. The installation also refers to those people that one can imagine being inside or outside the building. Susana Rodríguez (artist)
Susana Rodríguez (born 1980) is a Mexican visual artist who has had a number of solo exhibitions and has participated in various group exhibitions. Her work often consists of installations. Biography Susana Rodríguez was born in Guadalajara, México in 1980. She attended the University of Guadalajara, where she studied visual arts. She was a founding member of the ''Colectivo de Acción y Creación Artística'' (Collective of Action and Artistic Creation).
