El Rey (The Wedding Present Album)
''El Rey'' is the seventh studio album by The Wedding Present. It was released in the US on May 20, 2008, by Manifesto Records, and on May 26, 2008, in the UK by Vibrant Records/Pinnacle Records. The album was the band's first album since 2005's '' Take Fountain''. ''El Rey'' was preceded by the first single "The Thing I Like Best About Him Is His Girlfriend" as a digital download only. Production The Wedding Present arranged new material at Swing House and Cole Studios, both in Hollywood, California, and at Q10 in Glenrothes, Scotland. ''El Rey'' was produced by Steve Albini, the band, and Pete Magdaleno. Sessions were held in January 2008 at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois, with Albini handling recording. Additional overdubs were done at The Laundry Room in Los Angeles, California, with Magdaleno handling recording, assisted by Ulysses Noriega. The Wedding Present
The Wedding Present are an English indie rock group formed in 1985 in Leeds, England, by members of The Lost Pandas. The band has been led by vocalist and guitarist David Gedge, the band's only constant member. Closely linked to the C86 scene, the band has charted a total of eighteen singles in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, including a historic run of twelve singles – one for each month – in 1992, which tied Elvis Presley's record for most top 40 hits in a single year. Electrical Audio
Electrical Audio is a recording facility founded in Chicago, Illinois by musician and recording engineer Steve Albini in 1997. Hundreds of independent music projects have been recorded there. Unlike most producers, Albini refused to take any royalties from musicians who record at the studio. Founded during an era of increasing popularity for digital recording, Electrical Audio was unusual for using only analog recording technology, including mixing consoles, tape recorders and many outboard sound effects. The rooms are also designed to offer natural reverberation rather than adding the quality in post-production. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. Manifesto Records is an independent record label based in Los Angeles, California that has released records by Dead Kennedys, Tim Buckley, Cinerama (band), Cinerama, Concrete Blonde, Cranes (band), Cranes, The Czars, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Lilys, The Rugburns, Sing-Sing (band), Sing-Sing, Ken Stringfellow, Tom Waits, and The Wedding Present. Manifesto released the entire catalogue of Dead Kennedys in 2001 after the band obtained the rights from Alternative Tentacles. Manifesto is also the home of an imprint of Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of The Turtles, called FloEdCo; this imprint has released albums by The Turtles and Flo & Eddie. Steve Albini
Steven Frank Albini (; July 22, 1962 – May 7, 2024) was an American musician and audio engineer. He founded and fronted the influential post-hardcore and noise rock bands Big Black (1981–1987), Rapeman (1987–1989) and Shellac (band), Shellac (1992–2024), and engineered acclaimed albums such as Pixies (band), the Pixies' ''Surfer Rosa'' (1988), PJ Harvey's ''Rid of Me'', Nirvana (band), Nirvana's ''In Utero'' (both 1993) and Manic Street Preachers' ''Journal for Plague Lovers'' (2009). Albini was born in Pasadena, California, and raised in Missoula, Montana. After discovering the Ramones as a teenager, he immersed himself in punk rock and underground culture. ''Valentina'' is the eighth studio album by English rock band The Wedding Present. It was released in the UK on 19 March 2012 by their record label, Scopitones. The North America release date was 20 March 2012, Japan 21 March 2012 and Oceania 23 March 2012. Background Valentina came four years after the band's previous album, El Rey. It was the first album since Saturnalia not to feature Terry de Castro on bass, although she did provide a few backing vocals. The album was produced by Andrew Scheps, who had previously worked with bands including U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Adele. Included in the eleven tracks is the only single to be taken from the album, You Jane, which was released as a single on 30 January 2012. In May 2015 Valentina was re-recorded by David Gedge's other band Cinerama. ''Take Fountain'' is the sixth studio album by The Wedding Present. It was released in the UK on 14 February 2005, through Scopitones Records, and a day later in the US through Manifesto Records. Background David Gedge originally recorded ''Take Fountain'' as the fourth Cinerama album, but after the break-up of his relationship with fellow Cinerama founder Sally Murrell, Gedge decided that this darker record should be released under his Wedding Present name. ''Take Fountain'' is the band's first album release since 1996's ''Saturnalia'', and returns to the noisy, jangly, intelligent indie sound of old. Take That are an English pop group formed in Manchester in 1990. The group currently consists of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen.
