Edward Greene (MP)
Edward Greene (17 August 1815 – 5 April 1891) was an English brewer and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1865 and 1891. Greene was the son of Benjamin Greene, a West Indies Slave owner, who established the Greene King brewery in Bury St Edmunds in 1799. Greene was educated at the Grammar School at Bury St Edmunds and in 1836 took over the management of the brewery company from his father. He expanded and diversified the company significantly, doubling the brewery workforce to fifty and increasing output to 40,000 barrels a year by 1870. Greene introduced unprecedented benefits for his workforce including a pension scheme and new standards of housing for his workers. He was a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Suffolk and a master of the Suffolk Fox Hounds. Sir Edward Greene, 1st Baronet
Sir Edward Walter Greene, 1st Baronet (14 March 1842 – 27 February 1920) was a British brewer and Conservative Party politician. He unsuccessfully contested a by-election in the Stowmarket constituency in 1891, but was narrowly defeated by the Liberal Party candidate. He was High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1897. He did not stand for parliament again until the 1900 general election, when he was elected unopposed as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bury St Edmunds. He stepped down at the 1906 general election and did not stand again. He was made a Baronet, of Nether Hall in the Parish of Thurston in the County of Suffolk, on 21 June 1900. Edward Lee Greene (August 20, 1843–November 10, 1915) was an American botanist known for his numerous publications including the two-part ''Landmarks of Botanical History'' and the describing of over 4,400 species of plants in the American West. Early life Edward Lee Greene was born on August 20, 1843 in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. In 1859 Greene moved to Wisconsin and began studying at Albion Academy, a very reputable institution with a religious emphasis. There Greene met Thure Kumlien, a Swedish Naturalist with an interest in botany. Greene accompanied Kumlein on field trips, further developing Greene's interest in botany. In August 1862, Greene joined his father and brothers in joining the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army. Though he never rose above the rank of private in his three years of service, Greene was able to advance his botanical studies, collecting specimens as he marched through Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama.
