Education In Taiwan
The educational system in Taiwan is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. The system produces pupils with some of the highest test scores in the world, especially in mathematics and science. In 2015, Taiwanese students achieved one of the world's best results in mathematics, science and literacy, as tested by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a worldwide evaluation of 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance. Taiwan is one of the top-performing OECD countries in reading literacy, mathematics and sciences with the average student scoring 523.7, compared with the OECD average of 493, placing it seventh in the world and has one of the world's most highly educated labor forces among OECD countries. Although current law mandates only nine years of schooling, 95 percent junior high school students go on to a senior vocational high school, trade school, junior college, or university. The Kuomintang (KMT) is a major political party in the Republic of China (Taiwan). Pingtung Tutorial Academy
The Pingtung Tutorial Academy () is a former tutorial academy in Taiping Village, Pingtung City, Pingtung County, Taiwan. History The tutorial academy was built in 1815 during the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan by Hsiadanshui County Deputy Governor Wu Hsing-chung and scholar Guo Tsui Lin Meng in order to revive local scholastic conducts. In 1895, the tutorial academy was transformed into a Confucius Temple. However, lack of funding to repair the building led to the abandonment of the building. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan in 1937, the Japanese government planned to relocate the temple. However, due to scholars effort in calling out for historical preservation, the academy was relocated to its current site on Shengli Road. In 1977, a well-known architect directed its repair and restoration works. The renovation work was completed in 1979. Mingxin Academy
The Mingxin Academy () is a former tutorial academy in Jiji Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. History The academy was built in 1885 during the Qing Dynasty rule as the first private school within the area. In 1908, it moved to its current location. In 1985, the building was designated as Grade 3 historic site. Exhibitions The library is arranged with old bookshelves, desks and chairs. There are also various kinds of traditional handicrafts displayed outside the academy building. Transportation The building is accessible within walking distance east of Jiji Station of Taiwan Railways. Jhen Wen Academy
The Jhen Wen Academy ( zh, t=振文書院, s=振文书院, first=t, p=Zhènwén Shūyuàn) is a former tutorial academy in Xiluo Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan. History The academies was originally built in 1797 as Wen Chang Temple to worship five major heavenly emperors of learning during the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan. It was the place where Jhen Wen Club was established for scholars to study poetry. In 1812, an academy for classical learning was proposed. It was completed one year later and renamed Jhen Wen Academy. On 8 October 1979, the site was tentatively listed as a class 3 national monument by the Ministry of the Interior and officially became a historic monument in 1985. Renovation was made for the great gate which was finished in 1989. Architecture The academy has two floors. The main hall and the wing room are constructed of bricks. Huangxi Academy
The Huangxi Academy () is a former academy in Dadu District, Taichung, Taiwan. History The building was originally built in 1888 as an extended building to the existing Wenchang Temple. The building was closed during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, the building was sold and many of its objects were stolen. In 1984, an architect and scholar Han Pao-teh completed the research on the academy and begun the restoration of the building. Architecture The building was built with late Qing Dynasty architecture of traditional southern Fujian style. Its roof has five sections and six wallow tails. Transportation The building is accessible within walking distance south west of Dadu Station of Taiwan Railways. Fongyi Tutorial Academy
The Fongyi Tutorial Academy () is a former Academies of Classical Learning, tutorial academy during the Taiwan under Qing rule, Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan in Fongshan District, Fengshan District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It is the largest preserved Confucian academy in Taiwan. History The building was built by Jhang Ting-cing in 1814 during Jiaqing Emperor rule. It was the venue for candidates to take the imperial examination. On 13 November 1985, the building was designated as level 3 historical monument. In 2007, the Kaohsiung City Government acquired the land title of the academy and restoration to the building commenced with a total budget of NT$ 100 million. Architecture The building was built using traditional Chinese style with wooden carving and tablets inscribed with phrases describing good manners. Daodong Tutorial Academy
Daodong Tutorial Academy () is a former tutorial academy during the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan in Hemei Township, Changhua County, Taiwan. History The academy was founded in 1857. Recently, the building underwent renovation; the pillars and columns were replaced and the façade was restored to its original look. Architecture The academy building consists of a central hall, east wing, west wing, and a garden. The central hall enshrines Chu Wen-kung and Kuei Hsing; the east wing enshrines the tablets of temple renovation contributors; and the west wing enshrines the God of the Land. The garden displays wooden logs used for the construction of the academy. Academies (Shuyuan)
The ''Shuyuan'' ( zh, t=書院, s=书院, p=shūyuàn, first=t), usually known in English as Academies of Classical Learning or simply Academies, were a type of school in Imperial China. Unlike national academies and district schools, ''shuyuan'' were usually private establishments built away from cities or towns, providing a quiet environment where scholars could engage in studies and contemplation without restrictions and worldly distractions. History The ''shuyuan'' originated in 725 during the Tang dynasty. They were places where scholars could teach and study the classics, and where books collected from around the country could be preserved.
