Edith Lagos
Edith Lagos was a Peruvian insurgent who was a member of the party Shining Path ( es, Sendero Luminoso), one of the multiple Communist Parties of Peru. Lagos was a prominent promoter of the group's agenda. Life Lagos was born in Ayacucho to a wealthy family. She studied law at Universidad de San Martín de Porres in Lima before dropping out to join Shining Path In 1980, Lagos escaped the Ayacucho jail after a Shining Path detachment blew a hole in the jail wall. She spent the next two years promoting Shining Path and participating in their operations. Shining Path
The Shining Path ( es, Sendero Luminoso), officially the Communist Party of Peru (, abbr. PCP), is a communist guerrilla group in Peru following Marxism–Leninism–Maoism and Gonzalo Thought. Academics often refer to the group as the Communist Party of Peru – Shining Path (, abbr. PCP-SL) to distinguish it from other communist parties in Peru. When it first launched its "people's war" in 1980, the Shining Path's goal was to overthrow the government through guerrilla warfare and replace it with a New Democracy. The Shining Path believed that by establishing a dictatorship of the proletariat, inducing a cultural revolution, and eventually sparking a world revolution, they could arrive at full communism. Anti-revisionism is a position within Marxism–Leninism which emerged in the 1950s in opposition to the Khrushchev Thaw, reforms of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Where Khrushchev pursued an interpretation that differed from his predecessor Joseph Stalin, the anti-revisionists within the international communist movement remained dedicated to Stalin's ideological legacy and criticized the Soviet Union under Khrushchev and his successors as state capitalist and social imperialist. The term Stalinism is also used to describe these positions, but it is often not used by its supporters who opine that Stalin simply synthesized and practiced orthodox Marxism and Leninism. Internal Conflict In Peru
The internal conflict in Peru is an ongoing armed conflict between the Government of Peru and the Maoist guerilla group Shining Path. The conflict began on 17 May 1980, and from 1982 to 1997 the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement waged its own insurgency as a Marxist–Leninist rival to the Shining Path. It is estimated that there have been between 50,000 and 70,000 deaths, making it the bloodiest war in Peruvian history, since the European colonization of the country. The high death toll includes many civilian casualties, due to deliberate targeting by many factions. Since 2000, the number of deaths has dropped significantly and recently the conflict has become dormant. There were low-level resurgences of violence in 2002 and 2014 when conflict erupted between the Peruvian Army and guerrilla remnants in the Valle de los Ríos Apurímac, Ene y Mantaro region. Rodrigo Franco Command
The Rodrigo Franco Command was a paramilitary organization that acted as a death squad in Peru from 1985–1990. The group was closely aligned with the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA), which governed Peru under Alan García during the years of the Rodrigo Franco Command's existence. The group took its name from Rodrigo Franco Montes, a member of the APRA who was assassinated by Shining Path militants. According to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the group committed various human rights violations, including the murder of a human rights lawyer, the murder of a member of the Communist Party of Peru (Red Fatherland), the murder of a member of the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, and the placement of a car bomb in front of a newspaper's headquarters.
