Edge Of Eternity (film)
''Edge of Eternity'' is a 1959 CinemaScope crime film directed by Don Siegel shot on location in the Grand Canyon. Plot A man who has parked his car and is looking into the Grand Canyon with binoculars experiences a murder attempt. The killer releases the emergency brake and pushes the vehicle toward the man, intending to have the car strike him and knock him over the edge. The man is able to leap out of the way at the last moment. A fierce struggle ensues and the man kills his attacker by using his foot to shove him over the rim. The man is then seen wandering, dishevelled and talking apparent nonsense, by Eli, an old prospector who tells a Deputy Sheriff about it. However, Eli has a reputation for telling tall tales, so the deputy ignores him to chase an attractive woman, Janice Kendon, speeding recklessly down the road. Don Siegel
Donald Siegel ( ; October 26, 1912 – April 20, 1991) was an American film and television director and producer. Siegel was described by ''The New York Times'' as "a director of tough, cynical and forthright action-adventure films whose taut plots centered on individualistic loners". He directed the science fiction horror film '' Invasion of the Body Snatchers'' (1956), as well as five films with Clint Eastwood, including the police thriller ''Dirty Harry'' (1971) and the prison drama '' Escape from Alcatraz'' (1979). He also directed John Wayne's final film, the Western ''The Shootist'' (1976). Early life Siegel was born in 1912 to a Jewish family in Chicago; his father was a mandolin player. Siegel attended schools in New York and later graduated from Jesus College, Cambridge in England. Bat Cave Mine
The Bat Cave mine was a bat guano mine in a natural cave located in the western Grand Canyon of Arizona at river mile 266, above Lake Mead. Mining The cave was apparently discovered in the 1930s by a passing boater. Several unsuccessful early attempts were made to mine the nitrogen-rich guano deposit within the cave for fertilizer. The U.S. Guano Corporation bought the property around 1957. Based on a reputable mining engineer's estimate that the cave contained 100,000 tons of guano, the company constructed an elaborate plan to extract it. A small airstrip was built on a nearby sandbar in the Colorado River, and all supplies and machinery needed were flown in.
