East Calgary (territorial Electoral District)
East Calgary was an electoral district in the North-West Territories from 1894 to 1905, which was created when Calgary was split into East and West Calgary. The two ridings would later be merged to form the new Calgary Alberta provincial electoral district, when Alberta became a province separate from the North-West Territories. North-West Territories
The Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately and a 2021 census population of 41,070, it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. Its estimated population as of the first quarter of 2025 is 45,074. Yellowknife is the capital, most populous community, and the only city in the territory; its population was 20,340 as of the 2021 census. It became the territorial capital in 1967, following recommendations by the Carrothers Commission. West Calgary was a single member electoral district that was mandated to return members to the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories, Canada, from 1894 until it was abolished in 1905. Calgary was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return one to six members to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1905 to 1913, and again from 1921 to 1959. The district largely encompassed the boundaries of the city of Calgary, and was revised accordingly as the city grew. James Reilly (Canadian Politician)
James Reilly (March 28, 1835 – July 9, 1909) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He was the sixth mayor of Calgary, Alberta. Early life Reilly was born in 1835 in Napierville, Quebec, to immigrant parents from Ireland. In Quebec he became an architect and builder before going to Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1882, then to Calgary in 1883. In Calgary he became actively involved with the local community. He played a key part in organizing a citizens group concerned about the location of the railway station that was built in Calgary. While proprietor of the Royal Hotel, he organized the first civic committee meeting on January 4, 1884. This was the first step leading to Calgary's municipal incorporation later that year. Alfred Ernest Cross
Alfred Ernest Cross (June 26, 1861 – March 10, 1932) was a Canadian politician, rancher and brewer, known as one of the Big Four who founded the Calgary Stampede in 1912. Early life Born in Montreal, Cross was the oldest of seven children. He trained as a veterinary surgeon. Cross moved to Alberta in 1884 to work at a ranch near what is now Cochrane, Alberta owned by Matthew Henry Cochrane. In 1899 he married Helen Rothney Macleod (1878-1959), the daughter of North-west Mounted Police Commissioner Colonel James Macleod, who gave Calgary its name. Business By 1886 Cross owned his own ranch, the A7 Ranche, located near what is now Nanton, Alberta. Cross returned to Montreal for hospital treatment for appendicitis. He returned to Calgary in 1891 holding a diploma that he had been trained as a brewer's apprentice and established the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company, the first brewery in what was then the Northwest Territories. Joseph Bannerman
Joseph McKay Bannerman, (March 12, 1850 – April 17, 1932) was a Canadian politician. He served on the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories for East Calgary from 1894 to 1898. He was one of Calgary's first members of the legislature. Bannerman was born at Helmsdale, Scotland, the son of Thomas and Barbara (née McKay) Bannerman. He married Christina Sutherland (also Scottish), of Winnipeg in 1885; with her he had five children. After Christina's death in 1907, he married English-born Emma Northfield. After Emma's death in 1917, he married her sister, Ruth. Bannerman came to Alberta, settling in Edmonton in 1882, and Calgary the year after. With his brother, he was a flour and feed as well as liquor merchant. A Protestant, he also served at a time as a City of Calgary alderman in the 1880s. Paddy Nolan
Patrick James Nolan (March 3, 1862 in Limerick, Ireland – February 10, 1913 in Calgary, Alberta) was an early Canadian 'frontier' lawyer, whose fame as "the greatest wit in the west" has led to stories and legends in Canadian folklore about his criminal law practice in Calgary. Nolan moved to Calgary in 1889, and located his office above the ''Calgary Herald'' printing house, which led to his friendship with journalist Norman Luxton. He was widely known as a hard-drinking lawyer with a sharp wit and a skill for defending the underprivileged class of society. Some of his clients included Caroline Fulham. He had an enduring friendship with the legendary journalist Bob Edwards, founder of the Eye-Opener. Canadian provincial electoral districts have boundaries that are non- coterminous with those of the federal electoral districts, except for districts in the province of Ontario, where districts in the Southern Ontario region are coterminous while those in Northern Ontario are not. Calgary-East
Calgary-East (formally styled Calgary East) is a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada. The district is mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Calgary-East has existed twice, the first incarnation was created from Calgary North East in the redistribution of 1963. The riding was abolished in 1971 when it became Calgary-McCall. The return of Calgary-East happened in the 1993 boundary redistribution when Calgary-Forest Lawn and half of Calgary-Millican were merged. This riding covers the central north east portion of Calgary and contains the neighbourhoods of Vista Heights, Rundle, Marlborough and Mayland Heights. Three MLAs have held this riding to date.
