This is a list of earthquakes in Japan with either a magnitude greater than or equal to 7.0 or which caused significant damage or casualties. As indicated below, magnitude is measured on the Richter scale (''ML'') or the moment magnitude scale (''Mw''), or the surface-wave magnitude, surface wave magnitude scale (''Ms'') for very old earthquakes. The present list is not exhaustive, and furthermore reliable and precise magnitude data is scarce for earthquakes that occurred before the development of modern measuring instruments. 1293 Kamakura Earthquake
The 1293 Kamakura earthquake in Japan occurred at about 06:00 local time on 27 May 1293. It had an estimated magnitude of 7.1–7.5 and triggered a tsunami. The estimated death toll was 23,024. 1026 Manju Tsunami
The 1026 Manju tsunami affected the Sea of Japan coast of then Iwami Province on June 16. Considered one of the largest tsunamis in the Sea of Japan, it generated a tsunami with waves of at present-day Masuda, Shimane. Off the coast, an island reportedly sunk because of the waves. More than 1,000 people were killed and 3,000 homes were destroyed. The source of the tsunami has been debated between an earthquake or undersea landslide. 869 Jōgan Earthquake
The and its associated tsunami struck the area around Sendai in the northern part of Honshu on 9 July 869 (the 26th day of the 5th month in the 11th year of Jōgan; or 13 July 869). The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of at least 8.6 on the moment magnitude scale, but may have been as high as 9.0, similar to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Mino Province
was a province of Japan in the area of Japan that is today southern Gifu Prefecture. Mino was bordered by Ōmi to the west, Echizen and Hida to the north, Shinano to the east, and Ise, Mikawa, and Owari to the south. Its abbreviated form name was . 684 Hakuhō Earthquake
The 684 Hakuho earthquake took place in Japan in 684, and is described in the history book ''Nihon Shoki'' from the 8th century.
