''Earth Defense Force'', known in Japan as , is a science fiction third-person shooter video game series by D3 Publisher, originating as an offshoot of the ''Simple'' series. As of 2024, it consists of eleven entries and six main installments, developed and published by various studios and publishers since 2003, primarily Sandlot. ''Earth Defense Force'' is a horizontally scrolling shooter developed by Jaleco and published as an arcade video game in 1991. It was ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as ''Super Earth Defense Force'', dropping the two-player cooperative gaming mode while adding graphics and selectable weapons. The Super NES version was released in Japan on October 25, 1991, and in North America in January 1992. The Super NES version was eventually released on the Wii Virtual Console in Europe on October 29, 2010, and in 2011 for Japan on January 11, and North America on July 14. It is included in Nintendo Switch SNES Online as of September 2019. is a Japanese manga series by Kōichirō Yasunaga which ran in Shōnen Sunday Zōkan beginning in 1983. The manga was written as a parody gag manga inspired by the tokusatsu series ''Ultraseven''.
