E.tv
e.tv (commonly referred to on-air as e) is the first and only privately owned free-to-air television station in South Africa. Founded in 1998, the company is headquartered in Cape Town. It is the fifth terrestrial television channel in the country, following three channels that are operated by the state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation (that is SABC 1, SABC 2 and SABC 3) and the privately owned subscription-funded M-Net. In 1997, the e.tv channel bought the broadcasting rights to broadcast English Premier League (EPL) matches and, later on, they also bought the rights to broadcast UEFA Champions League matches. After South Africa's 4 free-to-air SABC channels, e.tv is the most-watched network in the country, according to data from satellite TV provider DStv. eToonz is a South African Satellite television, digital satellite television free-to-air children's channel created and owned by eMedia Investments's e.tv. The channel broadcasts for a duration of 16 hours from Sunday to Friday, 17 hours on Saturday and 18 hours with movies during the school holidays. eReality is a South African reality television channel created and owned by eMedia Investments's e.tv for OpenView. The channel broadcasts 16 hours a day showcasing a mix of local and international nostalgic reality series and shows which never before appeared on e.tv. eReality is currently the most popular reality channel in South Africa. The decision was rather than aggregate reality content on the main e.tv channel there should be a new channel, which currently is exclusive to Openview. eExtra is a South African digital satellite television channel owned by eMedia Holdings, offering a variety of lifestyle, dramas, telenovelas, court shows, sitcoms and movies. eMovies is a 24-hour South African digital satellite television free-to-air movie channel created and owned by eMedia Investment's e.tv for the Openview platform. eMovies Extra is a sister companion channel. OpenView HD
OpenView is a free-to-view direct broadcast satellite television provider in South Africa which is run by Platco Digital (part of the eMedia Group which includes free-to-air channel e.tv). It launched on 15 October 2013. In addition to the "e" suite of networks, OpenView also carries the SABC networks, along with several domestic and international channels. It also carries nearly thirty audio-only radio stations. In 2023, Openview launched Ultraview, which is the pay-tv service of Openview. It launched with 2 bouquets, SPICE and eDGE. SPICE focuses on Bollywood content and eDGE focuses on LGBTQ+ content. As of 2023, OpenView is available in more than 3 million households. eNCA, also known as eNews Channel Africa, is a 24-hour television news broadcaster owned by e.tv that focuses on African stories and events. Launched in June 2008, the channel is South Africa's first and most-watched 24-hour news service. The channel has covered several important South African events, including the Marikana miners' strike, which culminated in clashes with police, leading to 34 miners being killed and more than 70 injured. eNCA's former Chief Meteorologist Derek van Dam became the first broadcaster in South Africa to earn the American Meteorological Society's Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation. eNCA's website launched in May 2013 and passed half a million unique users in September of that year. SABC 3
SABC 3, also branded as S3, is a South African free-to-air television channel owned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Since March 2024, it carries programming in English and Afrikaans only. M-Net (an abbreviation of Electronic Media Network) is a South African pay television channel established by Naspers in 1986. The channel broadcasts both local and international programming, including general entertainment, children's series, sport and movies. While the TV signal is generally encrypted, M-Net showed some programmes 'free to air' in its "Open Time" slot between 5 p.m. and 7 pm, until the slot closed on 1 April 2007.
