Duke Blue Devils Women's Basketball
The Duke Blue Devils women's basketball team is the college basketball program representing Duke University in the Atlantic Coast Conference of NCAA Division I. Team history In 1974, Duke hired Emma Jean Howard to teach physical education and to serve as the head coach of the women's basketball and volleyball teams. Initially, women's basketball was played as a club sport. In the first season, 1974–75, the team played locally, finishing second in the state with a 6–7 record. The women's athletic department merged with the men's athletics in 1975, and the second year is considered as the first official season of the program as a varsity sport. Howard remained as the head coach for the next two years. In 1977, Howard remained as the volleyball coach, while Duke moved up to Division I and hired Debbie Leonard to be the head coach of the women's basketball program. The Washington Mystics are an American professional basketball team based in Washington, D.C. 1995 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament
The 1995 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament featured 64 teams. The Final Four consisted of 1994–95 Connecticut Huskies women's basketball team, Connecticut, 1994–95 Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team, Tennessee, Stanford Cardinal women's basketball, Stanford, and Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball, Georgia. Connecticut defeated Tennessee 70–64 to win its first NCAA title and complete a 35–0 undefeated season. The first two rounds were held at the home court of the top four seeds in each region (except for San Diego State, which hosted three games in the West region). Gail Goestenkors
Gail Ann Goestenkors (born February 26, 1963) is an American basketball coach who was most recently an assistant coach for the Kentucky Wildcats women's basketball team. She is perhaps best known as the women's college basketball head coach of Duke University and the University of Texas at Austin. She led Duke from 1992 until 2007, when she was hired to replace the retiring Jody Conradt at Texas. Goestenkors left Texas following the 2011–12 season citing fatigue. At Duke, Goestenkors received recognition as the ACC Coach of the Year a record 7 times (1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007). 1987 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament
The 1987 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament began on March 11, ended on March 29, and featured 40 teams. The Final Four were University of Texas, Texas, Tennessee Lady Volunteers Basketball, Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, and Long Beach State, with Tennessee winning its first title with a 67–44 victory over Louisiana Tech. Debbie Leonard
Debbie Leonard (born November 22, 1951) is a former college women's basketball coach of Duke Blue Devils women's basketball and is currently a television commentator and State Farm agent. Leonard was head coach at Duke from 1977–92 and led the team to a 212–190 overall record. She was ACC and District 3 Coach of the Year in 1984–85, when the team went 19–8. Her best win total came the next year when the team went 21–9 overall and 9–5 in the ACC, finishing third. She led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1987. Elizabeth Olatayo Williams (born June 23, 1993) is a Nigerian-American professional basketball player for the Chicago Sky of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Haley McCloskey Peters (born September 17, 1992) is an American professional basketball player who is currently a free agent. She was undrafted in the 2014 WNBA draft, but has signed with WNBA and international professional teams during her career.
