Driftin' River
''Driftin' River'' is a 1946 American Western film directed by Robert Emmett Tansey and written by Frances Kavanaugh. The film stars Eddie Dean, Roscoe Ates, Shirley Patterson, Lee Bennett, William Fawcett, Dennis Moore, Lottie Harrison, Robert Callahan, Lee Roberts, Donald Murphy and Forrest Taylor. The film was released on October 1, 1946, by Producers Releasing Corporation. Plot Under government orders, Eddie Dean and his partner Soapy Jones head to J.C. Morgan's ranch to purchase cavalry remounts for the Army, only to discover that J.C. is a woman. The nearby town, Dow City, is in the grip of lawlessness led by Trigger, Clem Kensington, and Joe Morino. Tucson Brown, one of J.C.'s trusted hands, is part of the gang. When Eddie decides to buy horses, Tucson steals the herd to sabotage the sale, resulting in brutal murders of investigating soldiers. Robert Emmett Tansey
Robert Emmett Tansey (June 28, 1897 – June 17, 1951) was an American actor, screenwriter, film producer and director. He was active in cinema in various roles from the 1910s to the 1950s. He was credited under at least 15 pseudonyms, such as Charles Anders, John Foster, Al Lane or Frank Simpson. Tansey died in Hollywood at age 53. Producers Releasing Corporation (generally known as PRC) was the smallest and least prestigious of the 11 Hollywood film companies of the 1940s. It was considered a prime example of what was called " Poverty Row": a low-rent stretch of Gower Street in Hollywood where shoestring film producers based their operations. However, PRC was more substantial than the usual independent companies that made only a few low-budget movies and then disappeared. PRC was an actual Hollywood studio – albeit the smallest – with its own production facilities and distribution network, and it even accepted imports from the UK. PRC lasted from 1939 to 1947, churning out low-budget B movies for the lower half of a double bill or the upper half of a neighborhood theater showing second-run films. Frances Kavanaugh
Frances Kavanaugh (February 5, 1915 – January 23, 2009) was an American screenwriter known for penning B-Westerns. Biography Beginnings Born in Dallas, Texas, to Clyde and Robbie Kavanaugh, Frances grew up in Houston around ranching, cowboys, and horseback riding. She graduated from San Jacinto High School and then studied accounting at the University of Texas before moving to Los Angeles with her parents in 1940. She was married and divorced some time before 1940. Hollywood career She began writing scenarios after attending a workshop held by director Max Reinhart, and her scripts soon caught the eye of director Robert Emmett Tansey. He gave her a job at his production company, and she eventually proved her talent for screenwriting. Due to her prolific output of Western scripts in the 1940s, Kavanaugh was dubbed "the Cowgirl of the Typewriter."
