Josef Swickard (26 June 1866 – 1 March 1940) was a Prussian-born veteran stage and screen character actor, who had toured with stock companies in Europe, South Africa, and South America. Career Swickard emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1882. He was a stage actor several years before entering films with D.W. Griffith in 1912 and by 1914 was playing supporting roles for Mack Sennett. He appeared in Charles Chaplin's '' Laughing Gas'' and '' Caught in a Cabaret''. He remained with Sennett until 1917, when he settled into his prolific career of playing mostly aristocratic characters. Modern audiences are perhaps most familiar with his role of Marcelo Desnoyers, the well-intentioned but impractical French upper class father in Rex Ingram's 1921 film '' The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse''. Edwin August Phillip von der Butz (November 10, 1883 – March 4, 1964) was an American actor, director, and screenwriter of the silent era. August was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Christian Brothers College there. He acted in stock theater as leading man at the Imperial Theater in St. Louis. He went on to act on stage in New York. He appeared on Broadway in ''Mr. and Mrs. Daventry'' (1910). He appeared in more than 150 films between 1909 and 1947. He also directed 52 films between 1912 and 1919. He co-founded Eaco Films in 1914. He wrote novels under the pen name Montague Lawrence. August died in Hollywood, California. His grave is located at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood. Edith Roberts ( – August 20, 1935) was an American silent film actress from New York City. Career Born in New York City, Roberts was a child actress. Roberts performed in vaudeville before she went to Hollywood in 1916. Among her more than 150 screen credits are roles in ''Seven Keys to Baldpate'' (1925), ''Big Brother'' (1923), ''The Wagon Master'' (1929), ''The Mystery Club'' (1926), and ''Two O'Clock in the Morning'' (1929). In 1927, Roberts spent four months in Australia and the Fiji Islands as a co-star of a film for Australasian Film Company, Ltd. She also starred in films for Universal. In 1920, she completed work on '' White Youth'' and signed a long-term contract with Universal. Roberts's final film appearance was in ''The Adorable Savage'' (1933). Personal life and death Roberts was married to real estate operator Harold Carter. On August 20, 1935, she died shortly after giving birth to a son, Robert, at age 36.
