''Dreamer'' is the fourth and final album by the jazz fusion group Caldera (jazz-fusion band), Caldera. Critical reception Alex Henderson of AllMusic, where it received a 4.5 out of 5 stars rating, wrote "Caldera's fans -- something it didn't have nearly enough of -- hoped that Dreamer would be the LP to make the band famous in the jazz-fusion world. But Caldera continued to be obscure, despite providing an adventurous, captivating mixture of jazz, funk, rock, and Latin music. True to form, the writing is excellent on this album...For Caldera, the term "Latin music" meant a variety of things—everything from Spanish flamenco and Afro-Cuban salsa to Brazilian samba and Andean music—and on this LP, all of those things successfully interact with jazz, funk, and rock." Caldera (jazz-fusion Band)
Caldera was an American band that combined jazz, funk, and Rock music, rock with Latin music (genre), Latin music. Return to Forever and Weather Report influenced Caldera, but its members were also influenced by Soul music, soul, Afro-cuban, Salsa music, salsa, samba, and Peruvian music. Biography Members of Caldera, which was led by keyboardist Eddie del Barrio, Eduardo del Barrio and guitarist Jorge Strunz (Strunz & Farah), came from all over Latin America as well as parts of the United States. While bass player Greg Lee and saxophonist Steve Tavaglione were United States, US born, other members were born in Costa Rica (Strunz), Argentina (Del Barrio), Cuba (drummer Carlos Vega), and Brazil (percussionist Mike "Baiano" Azevedo). Jazz fusion (also known as jazz rock, jazz-rock fusion, or simply fusion) is a popular music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock began to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll. Jazz fusion arrangements vary in complexity. Some employ groove-based vamps fixed to a single key or a single chord with a simple, repeated melody. Steve "Tav" Tavaglione (born December 1, 1950) is an American woodwind and EWI musician. John Palladino
John Palladino (March 29, 1920 – December 20, 2014) was a Capitol Records producer and A&R executive. His most notable recordings were with Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, but he also edited records by Paul McCartney and Pink Floyd, and as an A&R man oversaw recordings by the Band and Quicksilver Messenger Service, among others. He was considered a pioneering recording engineer, being one of the earliest engineers to perfect recordings with analog tape, and developing several new recording techniques. Early life Palladino was born on March 29, 1920, in Ashley, Pennsylvania but his family moved to Southern California when he was two years old. ''Time and Chance'' is the third studio album by the jazz fusion band Caldera, released in 1978 on Capitol Records. The album rose to No. 29 on the ''Billboard'' Jazz Albums chart. Critical reception Alex Henderson of AllMusic wrote "As strong as Caldera and Sky Islands were, neither album made Caldera a big name in the jazz-fusion world; nor did the band's third album, Time and Chance. Quite possibly, a lot of the fusion lovers who were craving Return to Forever, Weather Report, and Al Di Meola in the 1970s would have appreciated Caldera as well if they had been exposed to their music. But the band never caught on and only had a very small following. You can't blame that on Caldera's material, for the writing of Jorge Strunz and Eduardo del Barrio is excellent on this LP. The band's imaginative nature is hard to miss on instrumentals that range from the flamenco-influenced "Mosaico" and the optimistic "Revivisence" to the Al Did Meola-ish "Horizon's End."
