Dr. Herman S. Dreer House
The Dr. Herman S. Dreer House is a historic building built in 1930 and located at 4335 Cote Brilliante Avenue in The Ville, St. Louis, The Ville neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Herman Dreer and his family, resided in one of the units from 1930 to 1952; and they used the second unit as a rental. Dreer's children retained ownership of the building until 2000. It has been listed as one of the National Register of Historic Places since February 20, 2009 for African American ethnic heritage and education. As of 2012, the rest of the city block is part of the National Register-listed Marshall School Neighborhood in The Ville Historic District. American Craftsman
American Craftsman is an American domestic architectural style, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts, beginning in the last years of the 19th century. Its immediate ancestors in American architecture are the Shingle style, which began the move away from Victorian ornamentation toward simpler forms; and the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The name "Craftsman" was appropriated from furniture-maker Gustav Stickley, whose magazine ''The Craftsman'' was first published in 1901. The architectural style was most widely used in small-to-medium-sized Southern California single-family homes from about 1905, so that the smaller-scale Craftsman style became known alternatively as " California bungalow". Herman H. Dreer (1888–1981) was an American academic administrator, educator, educational reformer, activist, author, editor, Baptist minister, and civil rights leader. He is best known for writing curriculum and programming for teaching African American History at most grade levels for early 20th-century public schools. Dreer is also credited with initiating Black History Month observance in the United States, alongside Carter G.
