It was founded in 1921 by Charles Henry Douglass, an African-American entrepreneur who was an established theatre developer well versed in the vaudeville and entertainment business. Prior to formal naming by the International Astronomical Union, IAU in 1970, Douglass was called ''Crater 162''.
