Aaron Crawford "Bud" Ross (November 8, 1868 – March 19, 1932) was an American actor, comedian, and screenwriter. Career Ross began his career in the 1880s, performing in musical comedies and vaudeville. He made his screen debut in the silent film '' The Burglar's Dilemma'' (1912) and had supporting roles in W. C. Fields's first two films, '' Pool Sharks'' and '' His Lordship's Dilemma'' (both 1915). He also supported Cissy Fitzgerald and starred in many comedies himself. At Vim Comedy Company and King-Bee Films starting in 1917, Ross supported a young Oliver Hardy and Chaplin impersonator Billy West in several comedies. Ross and Hardy co-wrote and appeared in the film '' Tootsies and Tamales'' (1919). He co-wrote many ''Peggy'' comedies in 1925. By the late 1920s, he was mostly playing supporting roles for Sennett, in Raymond McKee's ''Smith Family'' comedies and others. Billy West (silent Film Actor)
Billy West (September 22, 1892 – July 21, 1975) was a film actor, producer, and director. Active during the silent film era, he is best known as a semi-successful Charlie Chaplin impersonator. Beyond acting, he also directed shorts in the 1910s and 20s, as well as produced films. West ultimately retired in 1935. Early career Born Roy B. Weisberg (or ''Weissberg'') in the Russian Empire to a Jewish family, West emigrated to Chicago with his family in 1896. He appeared in many short films, first in ''Apartment No. 13'' in 1912. Chaplin impersonation In 1917 movie theaters could not get enough Charlie Chaplin comedies, and an enterprising producer hired West, who had been doing comic pantomimes on the vaudeville stage, to make imitation-Chaplin subjects to meet the demand. West, wearing the identical "tramp" costume and makeup, copied Chaplin's movements and gestures so accurately that he is often mistaken for the genuine performer. Leo White (November 10, 1882 – September 20, 1948), Leo Weiss, was a German-born British-American film and stage actor who appeared as a character actor in many Charlie Chaplin films. Biography Born in Germany, White grew up in England where he began his stage career. He was brought to the United States under the aegis of Daniel Frohman, a Broadway producer. He started his film career in 1911 and in 1913 moved to the Essanay Studios. In 1915, he began appearing in Chaplin's comedies and continued through Chaplin's Mutual Film comedies. His last appearance in a Chaplin film was a small role in ''The Great Dictator'', released in 1940. White also acted in and directed '' Triple Trouble'' (1918), Essanay's last Chaplin release. Ethel Marie Burton Palmer (October 23, 1897 - May 1985) was an American comedic film actress. Biography Burton was born in New York City and began working in films in 1915. She worked for Vitagraph, World Comedy Stars Film Company and Vim Comedy Company. She often appeared as a supporting actress in films with Billy West and Oliver Hardy. She co-starred in the first four Billy West comedies, during which time she met director Arvid E. Gillstrom. They became a couple and were married in 1917. Burton and Gillstrom divorced in 1931 and Burton continued acting under the name Ethel Gillstrom.
