Dorchester ( ) is the county town of Dorset, England. It is situated between Poole and Bridport on the A35 trunk route. A historic market town, Dorchester is on the banks of the River Frome, Dorset, River Frome to the south of the Dorset Downs and north of the South Dorset Ridgeway that separates the area from Weymouth, Dorset, Weymouth, to the south. The civil parish includes the experimental community of Poundbury and the suburb of Fordington, Dorset, Fordington. The area around the town was first settled in prehistoric times. The Roman Britain, Romans established a garrison there after defeating the Durotriges tribe, calling the settlement that grew up nearby Durnovaria; they built an Roman aqueduct, aqueduct to supply water and an amphitheatre on an ancient British earthwork. HM Prison Dorchester
HM Prison Dorchester was a local men's prison, located in Dorchester in Dorset, England. The prison was operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, and closed in January 2014. History Erected during the 19th century, the prison buildings are a typical Victorian design. The prison was built on the site of a Roman town house, the remains of which included a mosaic which is now in Dorset Museum. In 2006, it was revealed that 25% of random drug tests on inmates had proven positive. Though cannabis was the most commonly detected drug, a number of inmates had tested positive for opiates such as heroin. In 2007 the Prison Reform Trust said that prison staff were "battling against overwhelming odds in old and overcrowded premises", after an inspection report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons said there were too many inmates there, and too little investment in prison buildings and facilities.
