Dolichospermum Smithii
''Dolichospermum'' is a genus of cyanobacteria belonging to the family Nostocaceae. It was created by splitting from ''Anabaena'' using molecular evidence. It is paraphyletic as the author intends: the genera '' Aphanizomenon'' and '' Cuspidothrix'', though cladistically included, have "distinct and unique" morphological features that set them apart. The genus has cosmopolitan distribution. Many of the morphospecies in ''Anabaena'', ''Dolichospermum'', and ''Aphanizomenon'' (ADA clade) are not monophyletic. Work is underway to sequence more genomes from these genera to produce a species classification based on genetic branching. Species As accepted by the GBIF: *'' Dolichospermum affine'' *'' Dolichospermum berezowskii'' *'' Dolichospermum circinale'' *'' Dolichospermum compactum'' *'' Dolichospermum crassum'' *'' Dolichospermum curvum'' *'' Dolichospermum danicum'' *'' Dolichospermum delicatulum'' *'' Dolichospermum ellipsoides'' *'' Dolichospermum farciminiforme'' *' ...

Cyanobacteria
Cyanobacteria ( ) are a group of autotrophic gram-negative bacteria that can obtain biological energy via oxygenic photosynthesis. The name "cyanobacteria" () refers to their bluish green (cyan) color, which forms the basis of cyanobacteria's informal common name, blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria are probably the most numerous taxon to have ever existed on Earth and the first organisms known to have produced oxygen, having appeared in the middle Archean eon and apparently originated in a freshwater or terrestrial environment. Their photopigments can absorb the red- and blue-spectrum frequencies of sunlight (thus reflecting a greenish color) to split water molecules into hydrogen ions and oxygen. The hydrogen ions are used to react with carbon dioxide to produce complex organic compounds such as carbohydrates (a process known as carbon fixation), and the oxygen is released as a byproduct. By continuously producing and releasing oxygen over billions of years, cyanobacte ...

Dolichospermum Flosaquae
''Dolichospermum flos-aquae'' is a species of cyanobacteria Cyanobacteria ( ) are a group of autotrophic gram-negative bacteria that can obtain biological energy via oxygenic photosynthesis. The name "cyanobacteria" () refers to their bluish green (cyan) color, which forms the basis of cyanobacteri ... belonging to the family Aphanizomenonaceae. Type locality: Sweden, Denmark, Scotland, France, Germany, USA. Taxonomy It was originally described as ''Anabaena flos-aquae''. ''Dolichospermum'' was created in 2009, bringing in a well-defined group from ''Anabaena''. The similarly-named ''Aphanizomenon flos-aquae'' falls into the clade, but was not renamed. Genomes As of 2025, 4 genomes of ''D. flos-aquae'' are available on NCBI. As of 2025 (Release 10-RS226), GTDB's genome-based taxonomy assigns the genomes sequenced as ''D. flos-aquae'' as: * ''Dolichospermum flos-aquae'' LEGE 04289, assigned to '' Dolichospermum planctonicum'' * ''Dolichospermum flos-aquae'' CCA ...
