Dolen, Blagoevgrad Province
Dolen ( bg, Долен) is a village in southwestern Bulgaria, located in the Satovcha Municipality of the Blagoevgrad Province. Geography The village of Dolen is located in the Western Rhodope Mountains. It belongs to the Chech region. History Prehistoric and Antiquity Prior to Dolen's existence, the area was strewed with Thracians hamlets, the remains of which can still be seen around the village. The hills surrounding the village are scattered with Thracian necropolises. Preserved are also the Thracian vineyards which were used until the Bulgarian National Revival. Dolen is located on a Roman-Thracian road which used to connect Drama with Trimoncium, the Roman name of today's city of Plovdiv. Proof for the existence of this historic route are remains from the road itself at the eastern part of the village as well as the Roman bridge in the district of Banyan. Dolen Perkins-Valdez is an American writer, best known for her debut novel '' Wench: A Novel'' (2010), which became a bestseller. She is Chair of the Board of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation Board of Directors. Early life and education She attended Harvard College as an undergraduate, earning a BA degree. She completed a PhD in English at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Teresita Pasini (''née'' dei Bonfatti, 1869 – 1948), better known by her pseudonym Alma Dolens, was a prominent Italian pacifist, suffragist, and journalist. "Alma Dolens" is a combination of the Latin ''alma'' meaning "soul" or "heart" with the Latin participle ''dolens'' meaning "pained" or "grieving"; the name can thus be translated as "sorrowful heart" or "heavy heart", and is thought to refer to her feelings surrounding militarism and war. Personal life Alma Dolens was born into a wealthy Umbrian family in 1876. Her family was well known within the Italian unification movement, where they supported Giuseppe Garibaldi. ''Dølen'' (meaning ''The Dalesman'' in English) is a former Norwegian weekly literary magazine published in Norway between 1858 and 1870. History and profile ''Dølen'' was established by Aasmund Olavson Vinje in 1858. The first issue is dated 10 October 1858. It came out weekly, but there were shorter and longer periods when the magazine did not appear. The last issue appeared on 24 July 1870. Vinje died on 30 July 1870. Several of Vinje's literary works were first published in the magazine. He also published articles on travel, and editorial comments on art, language, and politics.
