Dodd (Lake District)
Dodd is a massive fell in the Lake District, Cumbria, England, four kilometres north-west of Keswick. It forms part of the Skiddaw range in the northern part of the national park and the slopes are heavily wooded. Forestry Dodd lies on Forestry England land known as Dodd Wood; for many years it was extensively planted with conifers right up to the summit which obstructed the view. However, Forestry England started a programme of tree clearance from the top of the fell in 2001 and the summit of the fell is now clear; it is hoped that it will revert to heather moorland in years to come. Influential guidebook author Alfred Wainwright voiced strong opposition to the afforestation of Dodd in his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells in 1962; it took 40 years for his wishes to come true. Dodd, Mead And Company
Dodd, Mead and Company was one of the pioneer publishing houses of the United States, based in New York City. Under several names, the firm operated from 1839 until 1990. History Origins In 1839, Moses Woodruff Dodd (1813–1899) and John S. Taylor, at that time a leading publisher in New York, formed the company of Taylor and Dodd as a publisher of religious books. In 1840, Dodd bought out Taylor and renamed the company as M.W. Dodd. Frank Howard Dodd (1844–1916) joined his father in business in 1859 and became increasingly involved in the publishing company's operation. With the retirement of founder Moses Dodd in 1870, control passed to his son Frank Howard Dodd, who joined in partnership with his cousin Edward S. Dodd Hall
Dodd Hall is a historic structure on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. The building currently houses the Department of Religion offices for Florida State University. The building is also home to the Heritage Museum and an ornate exemplification of Collegiate Gothic architecture. History A structure in the Collegiate Gothic style of architecture was built in 1923 to serve as the library for the Florida State College for Women. A smaller west wing was constructed in 1925, while larger south and east wings were built between 1928 and 1929. Above the main entrance is the phrase, "The half of knowledge is to know where to find knowledge." Inside the lobby is a painted ceiling and a large mural donated by the Class of 1949, "The University, Sunrise to Sunset" by Artemis Housewright, an FSU alumna.
