Doctrine And Life
''Doctrine and Life'' is an Irish religious periodical published by the Dominican religious order. It was initially published from September 1946 as part of the ''Irish Rosary'' magazine. From February 1951 it was published as a separate periodical, under its founding editor Fr. Anselm Moynihan. From 1951 to 1961 it was published bimonthly, before becoming a monthly publication in January 1961. Prominent Irish priest Fr Austin Flannery O.P., became its second editor in 1957, editing it up until 1988. It is now published ten times a year and the present editor (and a director of Dominican Publications) is Fr. Bernard Treacy, O.P. Dominican Publications. Dominican Order
The Order of Preachers ( la, Ordo Praedicatorum) abbreviated OP, also known as the Dominicans, is a Catholic mendicant order of Pontifical Right for men founded in Toulouse, France, by the Spanish priest, saint and mystic Dominic of Caleruega. It was approved by Pope Honorius III via the papal bull '' Religiosam vitam'' on 22 December 1216. Members of the order, who are referred to as ''Dominicans'', generally carry the letters ''OP'' after their names, standing for ''Ordinis Praedicatorum'', meaning ''of the Order of Preachers''. Membership in the order includes friars, nuns, active sisters, and lay or secular Dominicans (formerly known as tertiaries). Irish Rosary
''Irish Rosary'' ("A monthly magazine conducted by the Dominican Fathers"), was an Irish Catholic monthly magazine produced by the Irish Dominicans. The ''Irish Rosary'' was the first publication from the Dominican Publications since its foundation in April 1897, published from the Dominicans, St. Saviour's Priory, Dublin, the monthly journal continued to appear until 1961. Doctrine and Life was published as part of it from 1948 until 1951, when they were published independently. ''Irish Rosary'' promoted Catholic writing, publishing, poetry, and stories, and ran writing competitions. The magazine's ethos and content were against Freemasonry and strongly anti-communist; the paper took the nationalist, pro-Franco side in the Spanish Civil War. Austin Flannery
Fr Austin (Liam) Flannery (10 January, 1925 – 21 October, 2008) OP, was a Dominican priest, editor, publisher and social justice campaigner. Born Liam Flannery at Rearcross in County Tipperary on 10 January 1925, he was the eldest of seven children produced by William K. Flannery and his wife Margaret (née Butler). Thomas O'Loughlin
Thomas O'Loughlin (born 1958, Dublin) is Professor of Historical Theology at the University of Nottingham. He earned a BA, MPhil, PhD (NUI), STB (Maynooth) and DD hon.c (Bangor). Tom studied for his BA in Philosophy and Medieval History at University College Dublin, before going to Maynooth College for his BD(STB), then moving back to do an MPhil. He holds a Diploma in Theology from Mater Dei in Dublin, and a Diploma in Pastoral Theology from All Hallows College, Dublin. O'Loughlin began his career as a teacher at University College Dublin, and also taught at the Dominican Studium, Tallaght and the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy. He was later made a scholar at the School of Celtic Studies in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. In 1997, he worked in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies in the University of Wales, Lampeter, where he became the first Professor of Historical Theology in the University of Wales in February 2006. The Dominican Order (''Order of Preachers'') has been present in Ireland since 1224 when the first foundation was established in Dublin, a monastic settlement north of the River Liffey, where the Four Courts is located today. This was quickly followed by Drogheda (also 1224), Kilkenny (1225), Waterford (1226), Limerick (1227) and Cork (city) (1229).
