Divinyls
Divinyls () were an Australian rock band that were formed in Sydney in 1980. The band primarily consisted of vocalist Chrissy Amphlett and guitarist Mark McEntee. Amphlett garnered widespread attention for performing on stage in a school uniform and fishnet stockings, and she often used an illuminated neon tube as a prop for displaying aggression towards both band members and the audience. Originally a five-piece, the band underwent numerous line-up changes, with Amphlett and McEntee remaining as core members, before its dissolution in 1996. In May 2001, the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), as part of its 75th-anniversary celebrations, named "Science Fiction" as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. ''Monkey Grip'' is a soundtrack to the Monkey Grip (film), film of the same name, with songs provided by the Divinyls. The movie is an adaptation by director Ken Cameron of Helen Garner's novel ''Monkey Grip (novel), Monkey Grip''. The movie had little impact at the box office, taking only Australian dollar, A$451,000. The soundtrack was released in May 1982 and peaked at #25 on the Australian Kent Music Report album chart. The soundtrack contains the band's first single, "Boys in Town", as well as "Only Lonely", "Elsie" and "Only You" – all of which are featured on the international version of the Divinyls' first studio album, ''Desperate (Divinyls album), Desperate''. Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) was a division of a German media company Bertelsmann before its completion of sale of the majority of its assets to Sony Corporation of America on 1 October 2008. It was the band's first studio album release in five years and their final release with original lead singer Chrissy Amphlett. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. The compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony to store and play digital audio recordings. ''Divinyls'' (stylised as ''diVINYLS'') is the fourth studio album by Australian band Divinyls, released on 29 January 1991 by Virgin Records. The album was the band's most successful, peaking at number 5 in Australia and number 15 on the US ''Billboard'' 200. It also contains the band's biggest-selling single, " I Touch Myself", which reached number one in Australia, number 4 in the US and number 10 in the UK. ''Temperamental'' is the third album by Australian band Divinyls, released in 1988 (see 1988 in music) by Chrysalis Records. Three singles were lifted from the album – " Back to the Wall", their cover of Syndicate of Sound's "Hey Little Boy" and "Punxsie". The album reached No. 11 in Australia, but despite heavy promotion, was the last to be released through Chrysalis. Amphlett explained: "We still owed them more than a million dollars – unpaid reimbursement of their advances for recording, distributing and promoting three albums, and supporting all those tours, yet they let us off the hook. Chrysalis knew, as did we, that we'd never be able to repay such a sum. ''What a Life!'' is the second studio album by Australian band Divinyls, released in October 1985 by Chrysalis Records. The album is a genre of rock and new wave songs—written by Divinyls members Christina Amphlett and Mark McEntee. History After touring and promoting in the United States, Divinyls came back to Australia to begin the follow-up to '' Desperate'', with Mark Opitz producing again. They produced three songs including "Don't You Go Walking" and "Motion" but Amphlett and McEntee were not satisfied so they returned to the road, replacing drummer Richard Harvey with J.J. Harris, and wrote more songs. A year later they again tried recording, this time with the producer Gary Langan who was the founding member of the band Art of Noise.
