''Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'' is a 1988 American comedy film directed by Frank Oz and starring Steve Martin, Michael Caine and Glenne Headly. The screenplay was written by Dale Launer, Stanley Shapiro, and Paul Henning. It is a remake of the 1964 Marlon Brando/ David Niven film '' Bedtime Story'', also written by Shapiro and Henning, and was later remade in 2019 as '' The Hustle'', starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. The film tells the story of two con men competing to swindle an heiress out of $50,000. Caine plays educated and suave Lawrence Jamieson, who stages elaborate ruses to bilk rich women, while Martin plays his less refined, small-time rival, Freddy Benson. ''Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'' is a 2004 comedy musical, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane; it is based on the 1988 film of the same name. The musical premiered on Broadway in 2005 and ran for 626 performances despite mixed reviews. It has since received tours and international productions. The Australian production opened in 2013 to rave reviews and was called the "best musical to hit Sydney this century" by the '' Sydney Morning Herald''. Their biggest success was the hit single, "Gangsta Lean" (which spent six weeks at No. 1 on the ''Billboard'' R&B chart), from the album ''Gangsta Lean''. It was released under Hammer's talent company, Roll Wit It Entertainment. A top selling song of the year at the time, "Gangsta Lean" has sold over 2.5 million copies, with over 24.5 million views on YouTube. DRS was discovered by the production team, The Whole 9.
