Dimokratias Metro Station
Dimokratias (, , ) is a metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. It entered service in 2024. Construction of this station has been held back by major archaeological finds, and it is designated as a high-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction. At this station, an ancient and early Christian cemetery & church were found, as well as Ottoman inns and warehouses. The station was initially located further west, but was moved eastward so that it falls outside of the medieval Walls of Thessaloniki, thus reducing the chance of major archaeological works. Dimokratias station also appears in the 1988 Thessaloniki Metro proposal under the name ''Vardari''. Vardari Square is the old name of Dimokratias Square, named after the and the associated gate on the Walls of Thessaloniki leading to the Vardar river (Axios in Greek). The Walls of Thessaloniki (, ''Teíchi tis Thessaloníkis'') are the 4 kilometer-long city walls surrounding the city of Thessaloniki during the Middle Ages and until the late 19th century, when large parts of the walls, including the entire seaward section, were demolished as part of the Ottoman authorities' restructuring of Thessaloniki's urban fabric. The city was fortified from its establishment in the late 4th century BC, but the present walls date from the early Byzantine period, ca. 390, and incorporate parts of an earlier, late 3rd-century wall. Line 2 of the Thessaloniki Metro, also known as the Kalamaria Extension (), is a deep-level underground rapid transit line in Thessaloniki, Greece, connecting in the west with in the south-east.
