''Digger'' is a 2020 Greek drama film directed by Greek director and screenwriter Georgis Grigorakis. It had its world premiere screening as part of the Panorama section at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the independent jury International Confederation of Art Cinemas ''Art Cinema'' Award for Panorama 2020. Georgis Grigorakis
Georgis Grigorakis ( el, Τζώρτζης Γρηγοράκης; born 20 May 1983) is a Greek film director and screenwriter. He has received awards at the 70th Berlin Film Festival and the Hellenic Film Academy Awards 2021 for his debut film '' Digger''. Career Georgis was born and raised in Athens. He studied psychology in the UK and did a master's degree in film direction (fiction) at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, UK. He first started making short films in 2007 and his debut feature film, '' Digger'', was premiered at the 70th Berlin Film Festival Panorama programme, winning the CICAE Art Cinema Award. Greece has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was created for the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. For the 78th Academy Awards, Greece selected '' Nyfes'' but it was ruled ineligible for being in English. In the 1990s, Greek film law stipulated that the winner of the Greek Film Competition at the Thessaloniki Film Festival would represent Greece at the Oscars the following year. This is a list of submissions to the 94th Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The International Feature Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The category was previously called the Best Foreign Language Film, but this was changed in April 2019 to Best International Feature Film, after the Academy deemed the word "Foreign" to be outdated.
